Anne Helm (actress)
Anne Helm (also Annie Helm ; born September 12, 1938 in Toronto , Ontario , Canada ) is a former actress.
life and work
Anne Helm was born in Toronto to real estate agent John F. Helm and his wife Isabel . According to her own statements, she did not go to school because her mother did not believe in schools. At the age of twelve she began ballet training at the National Ballet Guild of Canada . When she was fourteen, the family moved to New York City , where they continued their education at the Metropolitan Opera Ballet School . In order to finance it, she started working as a model. She was so successful with it and earned so much money that she neglected dancing and got into acting through modeling.
In 1956 she had her first television role on the Phil Silvers Show. She also appeared in the theater, including in 1958 in the plays Cloud 7 and Edwin Booth on Broadway . At that time she was called the "American Brigitte Bardot " by a critic . In 1960 she played Eileen Sherwood in the pilot of the series My Sister Eileen ; in the series, however, Shirley Bonne took over this role. Anne Helm received guest roles in several series in the following years, including Adventures Under Water , Merciless City , Perry Mason , A Thousand Miles of Dust , The Untouchables , Alfred Hitchcock Presents , Smoking Colts , At the Foot of the Blue Mountains , On the Run , The People of the Shiloh Ranch and Bonanza . In the early 1970s she had a recurring role as Nurse Mary Briggs in the Daily Soap General Hospital . After that, she had guest appearances in series such as The Streets of San Francisco , Hart But Warm , Airwolf or Incredible Stories .
Anne Helm made her cinema debut in 1960 in the film Desire in the Dust by William F. Claxton . She had a bigger role in 1962 in Bert I. Gordon's film The Magic Sword alongside Basil Rathbone , Estelle Winwood and Gary Lockwood . In the same year she made a name for herself when she starred in A Summer in Florida with Elvis Presley . In 1963 she was to play the lead role in The Straitjacket alongside Joan Blondell . But when Joan Crawford became interested in Blondell's role, she got it. Helm looked forward to working with Crawford. Crawford saw it differently and had Helm replaced by Diane Baker . Anne Helm was very disappointed and lost all respect for Crawford. After that she had a role in Henry Levin's film Hotel for Lovers and in a few rather insignificant films. In 1980 she ended her film career in the film The Trial of Power , directed and starred by James Caan .
After her acting career, she wrote and illustrated two children's books under the name Annie Helm: The Sunshine Angel Book for Angel Workers of All Ages in 1992 and The Little Angel Workbook for Children of all Ages in 1993 .
Her younger brother Peter Helm also became an actor. She was married to the writer John Sherlock from 1967 to 1968 and has a son with him. From 1972 to 1980 she was married to the actor Robert Viharo . Their daughter Serena Viharo also became an actress.
