Arrival is the fourth album by the Swedish pop group ABBA . It was released in October 1976 and was the group's first studio album that immediately became an international million seller . With around 9 million copies sold, it is one of the most successful ABBA albums. The single Dancing Queen reached number 1 in the charts in 16 countries, including the only ABBA single in the US charts , and sold over 6 million copies worldwide. The two subsequent singles Money, Money, Money and Knowing Me, Knowing You also became international hits. As part of the promotional tours for the album, the group traveled to Poland, Great Britain, the USA and Canada, among others.

The album is also the first of the group on which the well-known ABBA logo with the mirror-inverted "B" was used. The instrumental title track was covered in 1980 by Mike Oldfield on the album QE2 and released as a single, for which Oldfield also took over the motif of the record cover , a helicopter. The picture for the ABBA cover was taken in 1976 at Stockholm-Barkarby airport .

Recordings

The recordings for the album began on August 4th, 1975, almost a month after ABBA returned from their tour of the Swedish folk parks. Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus , who were also the composers of the group, tried in the first recording sessions to produce a song that had a modern dance rhythm. Under the working title Boogaloo , the two artists developed a piece of music that was based on both George McCrae's disco classic Rock Your Baby from 1974 and Dr. John's 1972 album Gumbo was later named Dancing Queen by ABBA manager Stig Anderson .

After a promotional tour through Australia in March 1976, the band began further recordings for the album. Knowing Me, Knowing You was the first ABBA song to be about separation and divorce. Also, That's Me was recorded in March. At the end of April 1976 there were two more recordings for the songs Happy Hawaii and Why Did It Have To Be Me , with Happy Hawaii initially only being an attempt to Why Did It Have To Be Me , but later as the B-side on the single by Knowing Me, Knowing You was released, while Why Did It Have To Be Me itself appeared on the album. This development phase explains the similarity of the two songs.

Money, Money, Money was taped in May 1976 , followed by When I Kissed the Teacher in June . Dancing Queen was presented on Swedish television for the first time that month . One day before the wedding of the Swedish royal couple, Carl XVI. Gustaf and Silvia , ABBA performed in baroque costumes at the Royal Opera in Stockholm on June 18th . The recordings continued in July with the songs Dum Dum Diddle and Tiger . In August 1976, in addition to My Love, My Life , the eponymous instrumental track Arrival was created . In September various overdubs were added to some titles. The play Fernando , which has also been produced as part of the recording sessions was not on the original release of Arrival contain. It was released as a single and in the Australian and New Zealand pressings on the album, but is now included as a bonus track on all CD editions.
