Arrival (English for arrival is) an American science fiction film of the Canadian director Denis Villeneuve from the year 2016 . Amy Adams , Forest Whitaker and Jeremy Renner can be seen in the leading roles . The script, written by Eric Heisserer , is based on the short story Story of Your Life (1998) by Ted Chiang . The film is about the landing of several alien spaceships on earth and shows a group of experts who are supposed to communicate with the aliens and find out the reason for their presence.

The film premiered on September 1, 2016 at the Venice International Film Festival . Arrival hit theaters on November 11th in the United States and November 24th in Germany.

action

The film begins with linguist Dr. Louise Banks sees the life of her daughter, who dies of a rare disease at the age of 12, pass by in her mind. The main plot begins when twelve alien spaceships land in different places on earth. Banks and the physicist Ian Donnelly are hired by US Colonel Weber for an American team that is supposed to contact the alien beings who have landed in Montana after initial attempts by the military and secret services have remained unsuccessful. The 450 m high, black, monolithic spaceship, known as a “shell” because of its shape, opens a gravity- manipulating shaft every 18 hours and thus enables people to enter it. Inside, the two scientists begin to communicate with two of the beings - jokingly called Abbott and Costello : separated by a transparent wall, Banks introduces the people with tablets, while the extraterrestrials, known as "heptapods" (heptipods) because of their appearance, with theirs Extremities “write” signs on the wall that are reminiscent of whitewashed ornate circles.

In laborious work, the two scientists manage to decipher these logographic symbols and to establish communication with the beings in regular meetings. Dr. Banks, however, is increasingly haunted by thoughts of a girl who appears to be her daughter.

Although the understanding with the heptapods is completely peaceful, the governments of several other states are increasingly viewing the aliens as a threat and are considering military measures. The Chinese General Shang is particularly inclined to do so. When Banks translated alien messages as "offer a weapon" and the Chinese team came up with the translation "use a weapon", the situation came to a head. A global war becomes more likely - although no attack takes place - and communication between the international teams of scientists is cut off. A race against time begins for Banks and Donnelly.

Fearful of the aliens and spurred on by lashing media reports, a group of American soldiers in Montana placed a timed charge in the spaceship on their own. Banks and Donnelly return to the spaceship alone to make another attempt at understanding, just as the soldiers leave the ship. Despite their attempts to stop Banks and Donnelly, they enter the spaceship. Just before the bomb goes off, the aliens throw a torrent of signs on the wall. At the same time, the soldiers in front of the ship open fire on security forces when they are supposed to be caught by them. The bomb detonates, but a heptapod throws the two scientists back into the access shaft and closes it, allowing Banks and Donnelly to narrowly escape the explosion.

Donnelly finds out mathematically that the last drawing tablet points to the compound of the twelve spaceships. When the evacuation of the camp is ordered due to the escalating conflict, Banks goes back to the spaceship alone. It is picked up with a small capsule and now communicates directly with Costello without the partition. Abbott was killed in the explosion. Banks asks Costello the purpose of the aliens' visit. He replies that they want to help mankind, that their language - their "gift" to mankind - enables the non-linear perception of time and that in 3000 years they will need the help of mankind. The alien symbol previously interpreted as a “weapon” can therefore also be translated as “tool” or “gift” and is therefore to be understood as an invitation to the aliens to communicate with them.

Banks realizes that communicating with the heptapods has given her the ability to “remember” the future, and that the flashbacks and memories of her daughter while working with language are actually glimpses of the future and future life were with her daughter. She also has a premonition of a United Nations event 18 months later. There she thanked General Shang personally for calling on his private cell phone, which prompted him to refrain from military action. He was particularly impressed by the fact that Banks recited the last words of his late wife. He then whispers these words to her and shows her his cell phone number. In the confusion of the evacuation, she actually reached the general at the last second via a satellite phone. The global conflict is averted, the nations re-establish contact with one another, and the spaceships disappear.

When the camp at the landing site is dismantled, Banks and Donnelly discuss their future, and Louise sees Donnelly as her daughter's father in a vision. She also experiences her decision to have a child together and thus also to live with her daughter, despite the short time they will have together.

background

Arrival is based on the short story Story of Your Life , published in 1998 by science fiction author Ted Chiang , under whose name the film was initially to be published (in German it is included in the volume Die Hölle ist die Abs Absheit Gottes by Ted Chiang). The film is based in the main points on the plot of the short story, but sometimes also takes greater artistic freedom. The film was renamed Arrival in June 2016.

The ink fonts of the alien species were designed and designed by the artist Martine Bertrand from Montreal .

production

In November 2012, the production company FilmNation Entertainment announced that there would be a film adaptation of Chiang's short story, the production of which was planned for 2013. However, this project failed; the visualization of the film did not begin until 2014, when Paramount Pictures secured the rights to Story of Your Life for nearly 20 million US dollars and announced Amy Adams as the leading actress. The other main actors signed in early to mid-2015, such as B. Jeremy Renner in March, Forest Whitaker in April and Michael Stuhlbarg in June. Filming began on June 7, 2015 in Montreal , Canada.

Reviews

Tobias Riegel writes in Neues Deutschland that the film is based on an original and clever conceptual structure that ends up being spectacularly and coherently. The “digression into the riddles of our existence” could be very entertaining. "The experienced to convincing actors, the beguiling and yet restrained visual concept, the sometimes abysmal bombast music, the reduced but never cheap equipment" - these elements would combine to create an emotional and yet clever and pleasantly slow story.

Carsten Baumgardt says on film releases that the deliberately cool staging “with superb, but consistently gloomy images” creates a gap between the characters and the audience for a long time, which only slowly disappears during the course of the film. In the finale, the viewer gets "suddenly to feel the emotional force of an entire film". The director succeeds in creating a blatant alternative to Independence Day , namely "an ambitious, emotional and exciting high-concept film" that gives his audience a lot to think about.

David Kleingers emphasizes on Spiegel Online that watching “the great Amy Adams decoding gracefully peculiar ink blots” is more captivating than a huge thunderstorm. He asks whether there has ever been a film before in which the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis - according to which every language forms a very specific perception of the world - serves as the inspiration for a startling narrative that “everything that has been seen suddenly suddenly in a new light ”.

On Spektrum.de, Thomas Grüter is of the opinion that one shouldn't expect too much from a scientific point of view, as the film only marginally touches on the fundamentals of exolinguistics, the teaching of the possible languages of extraterrestrial forms of life. Not even the military seem to care that the aliens seem to be able to manipulate gravity.

On the Metacritic website , which evaluates various reviews, Arrival currently receives a rating of 81%. On the similarly proceeding Rotten Tomatoes page , the film currently has 8.4 out of ten points.

The film critic Jason Ward emphasizes in his film review that Arrival is not a “boring thought experiment” despite its difficult topics such as “ semasiographic writing systems and non-linear orthography ”, which is due in particular to “his solid humanity and his respect for the other”.

Gross profit

The film has worldwide revenues of $ 203 million with an estimated budget of $ 47 million. The film recorded 658,318 visitors in Germany.
