Arwal is a district in the Indian state of Bihar .
The area is 638 km². The administrative seat is the city of Arwal .
history
Today the district belongs to the Naxalite - communist influenced " Red Corridor ". In 1997 there was a massacre of untouchables ( Dalit ) in the district who were suspected of supporting the Naxalites. The act was perpetrated by a private upper caste militia .
population
The population was 700,843 in 2011. The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 18.89%. Arwal has a gender ratio of 928 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus typical for India. The district had a literacy rate of 67.43% per year in 2011 , an increase of almost 12 percentage points compared to 2001. The literacy rate is thus below the national average. Just under 91% of the population are Hindus and around 9% are Muslim .
Almost 7.4% of the population live in cities.
economy
According to official statistics, the Arwal district is one of the 250 most backward districts in India, which is divided into a total of 640 districts. The district's economy is entirely agricultural and there is virtually no industry. Rice , wheat and vegetables are mainly grown.
