Augsburg city buses

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This page lists all current and former buses of Stadtwerke Augsburg and Augsburger Verkehrsgesellschaft , which have been owned by Stadtwerke Augsburg (SWA) and later by Augsburger Verkehrsgesellschaft (AVG) since bus operations began in 1926 . In addition to solo and articulated buses (both high- floor and low-floor ), the list also includes the trailers and special vehicles previously put into service as well as the test vehicles introduced by the manufacturers. However, it does not include work and towing vehicles.

Current vehicle inventory

Since the beginning of November 2006 the vehicle fleet of the Augsburger Verkehrsgesellschaft (AVG) has been 100% low-floor. Since January 2011, the AVG fleet has consisted exclusively of natural gas buses. The only exceptions, with the exception of the first three - 3401 II, 3402 II and 3403 II, which were also natural gas buses - were the AVG replacement buses during the second Königsplatz renovation.

AVG has a MAN NL 243 A21-CNG-EEV Lion's City Facelift natural gas solo bus, built in 2012, which goes beyond the Euro 6 standard for testing in regular vehicles, in regular service with the car number 2261 . As of October 2018, a total of 87 buses are now available for scheduled services.

Overview of all former Augsburg buses

The following list provides an overview of all former Augsburg buses.

Solo buses

High-floor construction

The MAN SL 192 was a typical high-floor solo bus in Augsburg for many years

Bus operations in Augsburg began at the end of 1926 with high-floor solo buses. This year, Stadtwerke Augsburg purchased a power bus from MAN and gave it the car number 1. Just one year later, two more vehicles with the numbers 2 and 3 were purchased. Due to the increasing demand for buses, individual vehicles were repeatedly procured from different manufacturers until the end of the Second World War.

Up until the 1950s, vehicles were bought from various manufacturers. It was not until 1952 that orders for vehicle number 34 were consistently placed with MAN. The first major orders came to the bus manufacturer in the economic boom. The largest number of high-floor solo buses was later achieved by the SL 200, which was represented with 44 vehicles between 1975 and 1985. In the 1980s, the public utilities increasingly relied on articulated buses and low-floor vehicles, so that high-floor solo buses are no longer in use today.

Low-floor construction

The successor to the high-floor solo buses were the low-floor solo buses (here a MAN NL 232 CNG)

The first low-floor solo buses came to Augsburg in 1991. They served as a replacement for the high-floor solo buses previously used and thus enabled barrier-free use of the less frequented bus routes in Augsburg. In 1996, vehicles powered by natural gas were also purchased for the first time. As with the high-floor solo buses built from 1952 onwards, the low-floor solo buses were supplied exclusively by MAN.

The most successful model among the low-floor solo buses so far has been the MAN NL 202 II. A total of 17 vehicles were purchased from this diesel bus. Compared to the low-floor articulated buses, however, the low-floor solo buses lag behind in terms of numbers, as they can only be used on a few lines in Augsburg due to their lower capacity.

2206 II - 2213 MAN NL 202 1991 8th With this model, three-door solo buses were reintroduced in Augsburg. The decommissioning and resale of vehicles 2206 II to 2213 took place between 2005 and 2006. Most of these vehicles ended up in North Rhine-Westphalia, where they were only scrapped in calendar week 10 in March 2017. No. 2207 came to Poland and was scrapped there in 2013. No. 2211 was sold to Africa in 2006, where it has been used as a mobile home ever since. No. 2213 got to Bulgaria and was scrapped there in 2010.

They were then also sold on. Most of the buses were sold to Poland. No. 2218 was sold to the Augsburg airfield as a taxiway shuttle bus . The Augsburg professional fire brigade bought No. 2229 in 2007 and converted it into a large-capacity ambulance. In 2014 this was then replaced by a Mercedes Citaro O 530 (car 108) from the Gersthofer Verkehrsgesellschaft . The bus was offered for sale through a middleman on mobile.de, but was then sold to an ambulance service on eBay.de despite the considerable corrosion damage.

Articulated buses

High-floor construction

After the trailer was banned, high-floor articulated buses were used (here MAN SG 240 H)

On July 1, 1960, the amended StVZO came into force in the Federal Republic of Germany. It prohibited the transport of people in the trailer. As a result, bus trailer operations in Augsburg (as in other West German municipalities) had to be stopped. Henceforth the municipal utilities procured high-floor articulated buses in order to continue to guarantee the required transport performance. Again, with the exception of the three buses rented from Mercedes, only MAN vehicles were ordered. The SG 192 and SG 240 H models in particular were used in large numbers. A total of 65 vehicles of the latter type were put into service in Augsburg.

Similar to the high-floor solo buses, the high-floor articulated buses also began to purchase low-floor articulated buses as replacements in the late 1980s in order to enable barrier-free use.

Low-floor construction

As a further development of the high-floor buses, the low-floor articulated buses come into service (here MAN NG 272)

Similar to the solo buses, the high-floor articulated buses were gradually replaced by low-floor articulated buses from 1991. Thus, a barrier-free use for more frequented lines was also given. The MAN brand is also dominant in the low-floor articulated buses. a. also procured used Mercedes buses for the Königsplatz conversion. With 21 vehicles, the NG 272 II formed the largest group of vehicles ordered by MAN.

In 1995, in addition to the solo buses, articulated buses with natural gas engines were also put into service.

Special vehicles

Due to the long downtime of the Combino trams and the associated lack of low-floor trams, the municipal utilities procured a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter with a wheelchair lift and set up a so-called "Rolli-Shuttle". This was given the number 113 II. After all Combino trams were back in service, the vehicle was donated to the Malteser Aid Service Augsburg . The "Rolli-Shuttle" had to be ordered by phone and ran on the tram lines 1, 2, 3 and 4 that were available at the time.

pendant

Before the introduction of articulated buses, bus trailers were used on many routes.

In order to improve the transport capacity on bus routes that are very busy, the municipal utilities have procured several bus trailers from various manufacturers. These were in use until the StVZO was changed in 1960 and were then retired. Due to the occasionally high number of passengers on the trolleybus route , bus trailers were also used there.

The numbering was done independently of the buses. As a rule, smoking was allowed in the trailers. The motor vehicle, on the other hand, was reserved for non-smokers.

10-25 Schenk / Göppel 16 All bus trailers were retired in 1960. No. 19 later got No. 11. This trailer was initially in the possession of Göppel Bus Augsburg for many years after it was taken out of service. The Gersthofer Verkehrsgesellschaft then bought it . The roof warning lights have been removed.

Test vehicles

In the past, the municipal utilities repeatedly used test vehicles to test newly developed bus models. This sometimes happens as an empty journey, but often also in regular service. MAN prototypes are usually purchased in the normal vehicle fleet when the series vehicles are ordered. An exception to this was the prototype (year of construction 1998) of the MAN NG 313 CNG natural gas II articulated bus, which was not purchased by the Augsburg municipal utilities due to its second sliding door in the articulated part. In 1999 MAN sold it to the Wernigeröder Verkehrsbetriebe, a forerunner of the Harzer Verkehrsbetriebe Wernigerode . In October 2011 the bus then went to Vienna for test purposes . In April 2015 the bus was offered for sale by a private person in 2604 Theresienfeld, Austria via mobile.de. Ex "BUS MIeT - BAR" (but was never completed). Sale to Hungary for resale in Ukraine.

Mercedes-Benz also tried to sell buses to the SWA. In 1990 a Mercedes-Benz O 405 N was therefore used as a test vehicle in Augsburg for demonstration purposes. The efforts were unsuccessful, however.

It came to Augsburg in 2000 as a demonstration vehicle with a red license plate. After several weeks of the test phase in regular scheduled services, SWA bought this vehicle and added it to their fleet. Since the vehicle was also a demonstration vehicle, the bus first went back to MAN. When the bus returned to Augsburg in 2002, it was registered regularly in Augsburg and went into regular service. SWA also ordered this type of vehicle from MAN. The first buses came in 2002 and the last came in 2003. More vehicles followed in 2006 and 2012, albeit under the new type designation Lion's City . This vehicle was taken out of service in September 2016 and is said to have been scrapped.

Guest buses from MAN for testing, as well as demonstration vehicles

At Stadtwerke Augsburg and AVG, prototypes and test vehicles as well as demonstration vehicles have been and are repeatedly demonstrated and tested. This is sometimes done as an empty journey, but mostly also in regular service. The last time a MAN test vehicle was in Augsburg was in 2012. It was an articulated bus, the type designation of which is unknown. This bus has not been tested in passenger traffic and has been closed to the public in empty runs on a test track at the exhibition center. MAN prototypes and demonstration vehicles are usually purchased by AVG into the normal fleet when the series vehicles are ordered. An exception to this was the prototype (built in 1998) of the MAN NG 313 CNG natural gas II articulated bus, which AVG did not buy due to its second sliding door in the articulated part and was therefore sold by MAN to WVB Wernigerode . The latest guest bus, which has since been added to the AVG fleet, is the MAN NL 243 A21-CNG-EEV Lion's City Facelift natural gas solo bus, built in 2012.
