history

Sign in the Brachenleite nature reserve near Tauberbischofsheim (since 2014)

The Kurmainz barracks of the Bundeswehr in Tauberbischofsheim was given up in 2008. With an ordinance of the regional council of Stuttgart on the nature reserve "Brachenleite bei Tauberbischofsheim" of December 17, 2014, the reserve was designated on parts of the former military training area.

Protection purpose

The protective purpose is the preservation and development of extensively managed grassland in the complex with fringing societies, hedges and hut forest areas above main shell limestone, in particular:

  • the preservation and development of limestone grasslands, warmth-loving fringe communities in a complex with hedges;
  • the preservation and development of large-scale grasslands over main shell limestone from a complex of semi-arid, semi-arid grassland and grassland;
  • the maintenance and development of species-rich, poor, lowland hay meadows;
  • the maintenance and development of structurally rich transition areas between forest and open land locations.

The protection purpose is also the preservation and development of the living, reproductive, feeding and resting places of the animal and plant species adapted to these locations.

Flora and fauna

More than 800 animal and plant species have been identified in the fallow area. Many of them are on the Red Lists of Endangered Species or are included in warning lists. It is noticeable that the cross-gentian is represented in the Brachenleite area with a population of around 900 vines. This population density represents the largest occurrence of this endangered plant species in Baden-Wuerttemberg outside the Swabian Alb. The even rarer blue gentian finds ideal living conditions in the fallow area, which is secured by the nature reserve.
