Argen moated castle

The Wasserburg Argen is an Outbound Wasserburg on Lake Constance in Langenargen in Baden-Württemberg Bodenseekreis .

The moated castle was built between 1330 and 1340 by the Counts of Montfort . It burned down at the end of the 15th century and was heavily fortified during the Peasants' War . During the Thirty Years' War the castle was conquered in 1647 and burned down when the Swedish troops withdrew. Count Hugo XVIII. von Montfort restored the castle and had it expanded into a baroque palace with an orangery . It served him as a retirement home until his death in 1662.

After the bankruptcy of the Counts of Montfort, the complex was acquired by the Habsburg family in 1779 , served as a prison around 1800, passed to Bavaria in 1805 and was sold to local innkeepers for demolition. When Langenargen and with it the castle complex passed to Württemberg in 1810, the right to demolish the building was revoked. In 1858 Wilhelm I of Württemberg bought the ruins of the old Argen Castle for 3,000 guilders and had the remaining walls demolished in 1861. He had today's Montfort Castle built on the Burgstall .
