Magenheim Castle

Magenheim Castle is located in the district of Heilbronn in Baden-Württemberg above the municipality of Cleebronn and is one of the best preserved Hohenstaufen castles in Germany.

history

The place Magenheim was mentioned for the first time in 793, its last mention comes from the 9th century. Presumably the place went up in the place Rauhenklingen, which was lost around 1500, south of the Michaelsberg. The Lords of Magenheim were first mentioned in the 12th century and had two castles located close to each other: the Obermagenheim Castle on the Michaelsberg, which has now disappeared, and the Niedermagenheim Castle , to which today's castle goes back. The exact time when both castles were founded is not known, so it is also disputed which of the castles was the older. According to architectural findings, Niedermagenheim Castle was probably built between 1220 and 1250 and later changed several times. The early owners, the lords of Magenheim, renounced their possession of Niedermagenheim Castle with half of Brackenheim and half of Cleebronn in favor of Count Eberhard II of Württemberg in 1367 and died out in the early 15th century. Württemberg pledged Niedermagenheim with half of Cleebronn and Rodbach, Meimsheim and Botenheim in 1391 to Weiprecht von Helmstatt . In 1408 Bernold von Talheim was named as a pledgee.

Castle complex

The Palas from the southwest

From the hilltop castle built at the foot of the Michaelsberg and above Cleebronn , the well-preserved and often renovated palas and the extensively renovated enclosing walls made of original humpback ashlars have been preserved. A double neck ditch , the curtain wall and the remains of the former shield wall are still there. In twelve major construction projects, the castle was made fully usable for private and public purposes.

Todays use

The castle is currently privately owned by Baroness von Lamezan. Concerts and lectures take place there several times a year. The castle's premises can be used for events, and church and civil weddings are held in the chapel.
