Alternative locations for Neurosswag Castle and Altroßwag location on the Württemberg Urflurkarte (1833)

history

Neurosswag Castle, located to the right of the Enz and first mentioned in a document in 1301, was probably built in the 13th century by a branch of the Lords of Roßwag following an inheritance division in addition to the existing Altroßwag Castle . After there was no longer a male successor to the Neurosswager branch, the castle came to Count Eberhard II of Württemberg in the mid-14th century with shares in the village . This pledged on June 20, 1372 to on conduct and Wildbann everything for 4,000 guilders to the monastery Maulbronn indication of the opening law. On August 12, 1394 his successor Eberhard III transferred. Castle and village parts to the monastery for good for the deposit, but on the condition that Neurosswag Castle is demolished.

Location

Because the demolition was evidently very thorough and the stones were reused, the size and location of the castle stables could no longer be precisely determined as early as the 19th century. Therefore, three different locations are addressed (see map):

  1. If one takes the field names "Schloßwiesen" and "In der Burg" literally on the Urflurkarte from 1833, there are no doubts, even if Neurosswag would have been a rather unusual moated castle on a Werder in this region (location 1 (UFK), location: ).
  2. Karl Eduard Paulus tried in the description of the Oberamts an approximation on the basis of the still visible location of the chapel belonging to the castle and other traditional field names: South of Roßwag, at "a beautiful point located on the steep edge of the valley against the Enz", one saw from the former chapel of St. Nicholas still foundation walls and the remains of a small crypt and a surrounding moat. At the foot of this mountain ledge, according to Paul, “a slight outcrop” against the Enz was called “Auf der Burg”. "Next to this is the name" Burggarten "and opposite on the other side of the Enz are the castle meadows." (Location 2 (OAB) southeast of location 1, location: ).
  3. The community Ortbild Roßwag (GOR), however, ignores the field names and assumes the location further south on the height (location 3 (GOR), location: ).

Only a test excavation can provide certainty.
