Carunchio is an Italian commune with 631 inhabitants in the province of Chieti in Abruzzo . It is located about 56.5 kilometers south-southeast of Chieti and belongs to the Comunità montana Alto-Vastese . Carunchio is a very typical central Italian mountain village. The church is always on the top of the hill and houses are built around it.

The place is first mentioned in 1173 in the papal bull delimiting the diocese of Chieti.
