Castel d'Ario (formerly: Castellaro ) is a northern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 4541 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Mantua in Lombardy . The municipality is about 14 kilometers east-northeast of Mantua on the Tione and borders directly on the province of Verona .

history

The fief of Castellaro enjoyed considerable independence from the surrounding states until the secularization in 1797.

The former Strada Statale 10 Padana Inferiore (now a regional road) and Strada Statale 249 Gardesana Orientale (now a provincial road) run through the municipality . There is a train station on the railway line from Mantua to Monselice .
