The locomotive type Siemens ER20 of the Eurorunner series is a four-axle diesel-electric locomotive of the medium performance class built by Siemens . A 2,000 kilowatt diesel engine with a flange-mounted three-phase asynchronous generator generates the electricity with which the four motors (one for each axis) are driven. The locomotives are equipped with push-pull and double traction controls.

The model was initially built on behalf of the Austrian Federal Railways and named there as the 2016 series (called “Hercules” ). In Germany it was initially listed as the 253 series and is now listed as the 223 series in the vehicle register .

History and commitment

In addition to the ÖBB , several private railways in Austria and Germany, such as the Steiermarkbahn Transport and Logistik or the Regentalbahn for Alex traffic, own a total of 180 locomotives of this type.

One of the MRCE locomotives is in service with the Slovakian private railway BRKS . Since mid-July 2007 there has also been approval for the Czech Republic .

An ÖBB machine has been in use in Rijeka, Croatia, since 2016 .

Five locomotives equipped with central buffer couplings were delivered to Hong Kong in August 2003 .

The ER20 BF (formerly ER20 F ) is a pure freight train variant of the locomotive without train heating. This is used by Austrian and German private railways.

The locomotives were designated as the 253 series in Germany until 2007 , but the vehicle registration register has referred to them as the 223 series since then and awards the 253 series to the Vossloh G 2000 BB . With the Osthannoversche Eisenbahnen three ER20 Fs are designated as 2700 80 - 2700 82 (the OHE designations are based on the locomotive power in hp). The locomotives are used in passenger and freight traffic.

With the appearance of the six-axle Siemens ER20 CF or CU based on the EuroSprinter 2007 , these locomotives are now called ER20 BU and ER20 BF , 44 of which are in use in Lithuania as the LG ER20 series .

The last ER20 was delivered to Adria Transport in Koper in Slovenia in 2012.

The following companies use the ER20:

Name of the RU number country
Adriatic transport 2 Slovenia / Austria
Alpha Trains 11 Belgium
Railway company Ostfriesland-Oldenburg mbH ( Enercon ) 2 Germany
Railways and transport companies Elbe-Weser 4th Germany

Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai 44 Lithuania
LTE logistics and transport GmbH 4th Austria
Metrans 7th Czech Republic
Mitsui Rail Capital Europe 15th Germany
MTR Corporation 7th China
Transdev Regio Ost (leased from CBRail / rented from IntEgro) 4th Germany

SC Cargo Trans Vagon SA 2 Romania
Styrian state railways 3 Austria
Stern & Hafferl 4th Austria
The Länderbahn (leased from Alpha Trains) 12 Germany
Westfälische Landes-Eisenbahn GmbH 2 Germany

Most of the ÖBB machines are stationed in the Graz and Wiener Neustadt train promotions , as routes such as the Lavanttalbahn , Steirische Ostbahn , Radkersburger Bahn or Thermenbahn in the state of Styria , as well as, for example, the Gutensteiner Bahn or the Mattersburger Bahn in the state of Lower Austria require many diesel locomotives . In the Vienna area, the Marchegger Ostbahn is the last non-electrified route to be used most frequently.

technical features

The locomotive is equipped with a 16-cylinder 4000 series diesel engine from MTU Friedrichshafen with common rail injection, turbocharging and charge air cooling. When idling, 8 out of 16 cylinders are switched off to improve exhaust emissions.

If the power requirement increases, for example when starting up or on short inclines, the train busbar (for the energy supply of the wagons) can be switched off so that the entire electrical power can be used for the traction motors.

It is driven by a hollow pinion shaft drive. The motors are spring-mounted in the bogie frame, while the gear housing with pinion and large wheel is unsprung on the axle.

The locomotive has separate electrical circuits for the consumer and the starter. The electricity required for the starter is stored in capacitors . This enables two to three starting processes to be performed independently of the main battery.

The locomotive frame consists of two longitudinal beams with cross members at the head end for the bogies and the engine. The car body consists of a lattice framework made of steel profiles, with the roof slopes being load-bearing parts. The side walls made of aluminum panels are only glued on. The driver's cab is a separate prefabricated module that is connected to the box during final assembly. The buffer carriers are designed as deformation elements.

successor

From 2007, the locomotives were given a new, jointly for the euro Runner and the Euro Sprinter used locomotive body , which practically a new locomotive family Siemens ES 2007 emerged. For this purpose, the first, a six-axle version, has already been manufactured as the ER20 CF for the Lithuanian company Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai .

In 2010, the concept was finally further developed into the Vectron DE, which was exhibited for the first time at InnoTrans 2010.
