The GDR ice hockey championship 1958/59 was held in the major league with eight teams. Below the league there were two other central divisions. SG Dynamo Weißwasser became East German champions for the ninth time in a row .

1 BSG Aufbau Schönheide withdrew their team after nine games. The results have been canceled.

The top scorer was Joachim Ziesche from SC Dynamo Berlin with 27 goals scored. Grellmann received the most penalty times from ASK Vorwärts Berlin with 29 penalty minutes.

Promotion round to the league

Originally planned were two relegation games between the league's bottom and the winner of two play-off games between the two winners of the first division. While the latter was able to win the BSG Turbine Crimmitschau in a duel against ASK Vorwärts Erfurt (2: 2 and 7: 4), the planned relegation against the upper division was not due to the early end of the season of BSG Aufbau Schönheide. Instead of allowing Crimmitschau to move up to the league without a fight, a promotion tournament was set for reasons that are no longer comprehensible today. In addition to the two season winners from Crimmitschau and Erfurt, the runners-up in each season were also eligible to participate.

Promotion round to the 1st division

1 round

In the first round, the season winners met each other, i.e. the winner of season 1 on that of season 3 and the winner of season 2 on that of season 4. Since BSG Wismut Annaberg did not compete, BSG Motor Weimar reached the second round without a fight.

The SC Dynamo Berlin II secured a starting place in the first division for the coming season. The team of HSG Chemie Halle TH was delegated to SC Chemie Halle during the summer break and was then allowed to start as a sports club team - despite missed qualification - also in the first division.

Relegation (2nd league - district league)

The district league teams should compete in the relegation against the four last place in the second division. Due to the sometimes small number of participants, some districts had come together for joint championships and determined the district group winner, while the championships were canceled in other districts.

This year's season last BSG Lok Zittau II , BSG Progress Apolda and BSG Motor Magdeburg were able to secure the league. With the SG Dynamo Klingenthal , a single district representative managed to move up to the 2nd division.
