Empor Barby and Rotation Berlin had to deal with teams of the district group league in the fight for places for the league in 1981 . These included the first two of each season or their representatives. From season II these were locomotive Schwerin II, which came second instead of the season winner Einheit Berliner Bär, and Turbine Potsdam, who were entitled to fourth instead of the season third Einheit Steremat Berlin. The Berliners were not eligible because they could not register a junior team. From season III, the second placed HSG TU Dresden took part in the promotion round instead of the season winner SG Görlitz II. The teams of Season IV, including the former league club Plasttechnik Greiz, completely waived their participation.
Promotion round : The games were characterized by adverse circumstances, due to which the second from Lokomotive Schwerin could only play with four players without a chance and the players from Rotation Berlin arrived too late and the failed game against TU Dresden was rated 0:15.

The TSG Berlin-Oberschöneweide collective, headed by section head Eberhard Werner, provided a pleasant surprise in the final round of the four top league winners at the 31st GDR championship in field fistball. As in 1972 in Hirschfelde, the five won the silver medal. Although they didn't lose a game and wrested a draw from the old and new champion Chemie Weißwasser, the defending champion was able to win through the default counters. The women from Chemie Weißwasser lived up to their role as favorites, although the Lausitz women couldn't get beyond a draw against a great TSG Berlin-Oberschöneweide. It was the fourth title for the Wiedemann protégés from the glassmaking town.
Relegation / promotion : The teams in the last three places were relegated to the league. Lok “Erich Steinfurth” Berlin (Season I) was the first Berlin men's representative to make it into the top class on the field. Furthermore, the SG Rüsdorf (Season II) had qualified, but lost the authorization to Motor Süd Zwickau, because the youth work did not meet the requirements. Finally, the second from Lok Dresden achieved immediate resurgence.

"The heart of the GDR fistball beats in Hirschfelde," emphasized the president of the fistball association, Prof. Dr. Heinz Frankiewiez at the opening of the traditional final round with the four top league winners, the season highlight of the association with its more than 9,000 members in the industrial town between Zittau and Görlitz with almost 5,000 inhabitants.
Old master Chemie Zeitz, who won his ninth field title since 1963 and almost always competed with the same squad, was even able to afford a clear defeat against the enthusiastic, greatly improving locals, but was again "full" in the all-important meeting against Lok Dresden there". The Elbestädter, repeatedly revealing technical and in this duel also tactical deficiencies, had to do without their excellent rollover and thus never had a real chance.
