The two final tournaments of the four first place in the Oberliga women and men took place on July 15, 1989 in the "Ernst-Thälmann-Stadion" in Zeitz .
Since the previous season, the mode of the final round has been that the single round did not result in the final placements, but only further placement games of the teams coming in 1st and 2nd place in the single round in the final and the teams coming in 3rd and 4th place in the small final about the medals decided.
Promotion / relegation : According to the rule, the last two teams had to qualify for the league in games with the representatives of the league. The SG Cossebaude decided not to participate. In addition, Turbine Potsdam left the company because it was unable to meet the association's demands for young talent.
The following teams from the league had qualified for participation in the qualifying round for the Oberliga 1989/90 in Wildau : Motor Rathenow (winner of season I) or Lok Schwerin II (OA) (second of season I), TSG Berlin- Oberschöneweide II (winner of season II) the SpG Görlitz (second of season III), because the first-placed SpG Heidenau was not eligible for promotion due to lack of young talent, the SG Bademeusel (winner of season IV) and progress Glauchau (second of season V) instead of first placed BSG Leipzig-Eutritzsch, which also did not have the required offspring.
No representative from seasons I and II took part in the promotion round.
In addition to the upper division unit Steremat Berlin as the first of the promotion round and the SG Bademeusel as the second, the Görlitz gaming community achieved participation in the upper division as third place after the withdrawal of the upper division Turbine Potsdam.
