The East German championships in field Fistball 1961 were the twelfth hosting of the East German championships of men and women in the field Fistball the GDR in the 1961st
The last match day took place on August 12th and 13th, 1961 in the Ostragehege in Dresden .
After the departure of the master Empor Barby for no known reason, the women of Lok Köthen won the championship title for the first time. In the men's category, the ISG Hirschfelde secured the title for the seventh time in a row.
Due to the relegation regulation to reduce the number of league teams after merging the relays, ten instead of twelve teams played for women and twelve instead of 14 for men.

The women's league was played in two seasons, which competed against each other on game days 1 and 3 and against each other on game days 2 and 4. Lok Köthen, unit Rostock, Lok Schwerin, Motor Rathenow and Chemie Jena as a replacement for Empor Barby [A] played in Season I, Rotation Dresden Mitte, Medicine Weimar, Progress Groitzsch, SG Eutritzsch and ISG Hirschfelde in Season II. Motor Görlitz Mitte - in the previous year in 9th place - no longer took part in the Oberliga. This reduced the number of participants to ten.

2nd matchday: June 17 and 18, 1961: both seasons in Leipzig
Matchday 3: July 9, 1961: Season I in Barby, Season II in Oschatz

Promotion games : The last two teams were relegated to the league. The two best teams of the four district groups took part in the games played in Halle on August 26 and 27, 1961 for promotion to the major league in 1962 . The teams of activist Staßfurt and Motor West Suhl qualified.

Remarks
[A]The champions of the previous season - the women's team from Empor Barby - was replaced by Chemie Jena for reasons not mentioned after the relay division. The results of season I on the first day of the match are not documented. On the second matchday, Chemie Jena was listed in the league table instead of Empor Barby. On the day of the final, several former Empor Barby players played for Lok Köthen.
