Delta is a federal state in the West African country of Nigeria with the capital Asaba . The largest city in the state is Warri with 536,068 inhabitants (2005).
geography
The state is located in the south of the country and is bordered to the north by the state of Edo , to the south by the state of Bayelsa , to the northwest by the state of Ondo , to the southwest by the Atlantic Ocean , to the northeast by the state of Anambra and to the southeast by the state of Rivers .
population
There are many ethnic groups such as Urhobo , Itsekiri , Isoko , Ijaw and Igbo with different languages, many clans , mutual conflicts and rebel groups such as the " Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta " (MEND).
history
The state was formed on August 27, 1991 from part of the state of Edo . The first administrator was Luke Chijiuba Ochulor between August 28, 1991 and January 1992. The current governor since May 29, 2007 is Emmanuel Uduaghan .

The state is divided into 25 Local Government Areas . These are: Aniocha North, Aniocha South, Bomadi, Burutu, Ethiope East, Ethiope West, Ika North, Ika South, Isoko North, Isoko South, Ndokwa East, Ndokwa West, Okpe, Oshimili North, Oshimili South, Patani, Sapele, Udu , Ughelli North, Ughelli South, Ukwuani, Uvwie, Warri North, Warri South and Warri South-West.
economy
Major industries in the state include fishing , agriculture, and forestry .
Among other things, cassava , yams and potatoes are grown, but glass and timber are also produced and oil is extracted. Delta ranks second behind the state of Rivers in crude oil production . Warri is home to the country's second largest oil refinery and a number of petrochemical operations. But oil also endangers fisheries and fuels ethnic conflicts.
