history

ERSV Passau

There was already an ice hockey team in Passau in the 1950s, this was a department of the ERSV Passau (ice and roller skating sports club). Depending on the source, it is also referred to as ERC Passau , ERSC Passau or EC Passau .

ERSV Passau was founded in 1929 as the Ice Sports Club (ESV) Passau. In 1934 a roller skating department was added and at the same time renamed the Ice and Roller Skate Sports Club (ERSV) Passau. From 1936 roller hockey was played, but no ice hockey was played until the end of the Second World War. The first ice hockey game in Passau took place on January 16, 1949 on the Hals reservoir between ETC Passau-Bad Hals and SV Passau (today 1. FC Passau ). This game ended 2: 4 and was rated as an internal test game for the coming season in the reporting. The first league game took place on January 29, 1950 between ERSV Passau and EV Landshut on the ice rink on the Kleiner Parzierplatz; this game ended 5: 7 (2: 2, 1: 4, 2: 1). This team played u. a. between January 31, 1952 and February 17, 1965 nine times against TSV 1861 Straubing, the forerunner of today's Straubing Tigers . The Passau won only the first game (final score 6: 3), which the Straubing reporter attributed mainly to the poor lighting conditions.

At that time, ERSV Passau played its home games on a natural ice rink on the parade ground in front of the Nibelungenhalle , which was bordered by wooden planks without a board . However, since their operation became too expensive - the last game against Straubing had to be played in the Gäubodenstadt, as there was no playable ice in Passau - the team withdrew from the ice hockey district class in 1965. In 1980 the ERSV Passau was officially deleted from the register of associations due to the loss of all members.

Passau Black Hawks

In the decades that followed, there were only hobby teams in Passau. This changed when, on December 23, 1997, the Passau Wolves and the Patriching Black Hawks merged and founded the EHF Passau Black Hawks eV . The abbreviation EHF stands for ice hockey fans. After the Passau ice rink on Westerburger Straße ( ) no suitable stadium was available for the game, the Black Hawks team was initially organized as a hobby. In the junior division, teams took part in league games early on in the form of syndicates with the ESV Waldkirchen and the Vilshofener Wölfen . In 1999 the ice rink on Westerburger Strasse was converted into an artificial ice rink, after which the senior team took part in the Bayern Cup for Bavarian amateur teams.

Coordinates: 48 ° 33 ′ 26 ″  N , 13 ° 24 ′ 44.1 ″  E In March 2002 the plans for an ice rink in Passau were well advanced. In March 2003 it was announced that the ice arena would be built as planned. After the search for sponsors was also successful, the same month the news was announced that the Black Hawks will be able to participate in the regular league operations in the fall. Also in the same month the future trainer was presented with Ekkehard Sebald from Deggendorf. Sebald was previously active for two years at ESC Vilshofen in the regional league and made it into the major league as a player. After new signings were constantly added over the course of the year, the first preparatory game against the second team of the Eisbären Regensburg took place in Regensburgon September 13, which was lost 1:10. After another three preparation games - two of which were won -the Black Hawks' first league gamecame on October 26, 2003 in Munich . The game against the later bottom USC Munich decided the Passau with 19: 1 for themselves.

After the first four games of the season as well as all preparatory games were played away, the first game in the ice arena took place on November 16, 2003 in front of more than 1000 spectators. The game against ASV Dachau was lost 5-7. However, since this was the only defeat and you were better in direct comparison with the Dachauer tied on points - the second leg was won 9: 3 - the Black Hawks were at the end of the season together with the winners of the three other district league groups as promoters in the Bavarian State League firmly. In the following championship games, the Passau team decided against TSV Kottern in the semifinals and against ERC Ingolstadt in the games for third place, but in the end it was only enough for fourth and last place.

In the following 2004/05 season, the club failed in the Landesliga Bayern after third place in Group East in the qualifying round for the play-offs , in which in Group 3 in second place - the Memminger Indians were first - the season ended .

Things went better in the 2005/06 season under the new coach Otto Keresztes . After first place after the main round, the Black Hawks also prevailed in the play-off final against EC Ulm / Neu-Ulm 2000 and thus secured promotion to the Bavarian Ice Hockey League . At the same time, the Black Hawks won the Bayernkrug , the Bavarian ice hockey cup .

In the 2006/07 season, the EHF Passau Black Hawks played successfully in the Bavarian ice hockey league and took first place after the preliminary round. In the play-offs they reached the final, where they defeated Deggendorfer SC and won the Bavarian championship in 2006/07. After reviewing the documents by the ice hockey game operating company (ESBG), the Black Hawks were granted the license for the major league .

In the 2007/08 season , the ice hockey joy were traded for the first time as relegation candidates, after they had always been among the promotion candidates in the lower leagues. After the conclusion of the main round, they had tenth and thus last place in the group South and fought in the play-downs to stay up. Although coach Otto Keresztes was replaced by Klaus Feistl in February and the obligation of another goalkeeper followed, this goal was initially not achieved after the defeat against TEV Miesbach in the second round. Since the Wölfe Freiburg moved up to the 2nd ice hockey Bundesliga for the DEL promoted Kassel Huskies , the Black Hawks were allowed to remain in the league.

In addition to the Oberliga team, the ice hockey fans reported for the first time a second senior team for the sixth-class Bavarian district league for the 2007/08 season , which ended up in sixth place. After a break in the 2009/10 and 2010/11 seasons, the second senior team was reported to play again for the 2011/12 season.

After the ice hockey friends finished the preliminary round with 7th place in the 2011/12 season , the team lost in the qualifying playoffs for the Oberliga playoffs to the Tölzer Löwen with three defeats. At the beginning of April 2012, the club's board of directors announced that the license for the 2012/13 season would only be applied for with a team outsourced from the club. On May 28, 2012, the failure of the foundation of the GmbH and the withdrawal of the team from the upper league to the sixth class district league was announced.

Ice stadium "Ice Arena Passau"

The teams' games have been played in the half-open ice arena in Passau-Kohlbruck since 2003. The stadium was rebuilt for the 2007/08 season and after these construction measures will offer space for around 1,500 spectators. There are seats available for 200 of these.

After the rise of the Passau Black Hawks, the communications company Communigate secured the naming rights to the ice arena for three years, which was henceforth called "IceGate powered by CommuniGate ". ComuniGates did not renew the contract for the 2010/11 season. Since then, the stadium has been called the "Ice Arena Passau" again. An initiative is pushing the conversion into a closed ice rink, with the best possible ventilation technology to get the hall's problems with droplet formation (stalactites on the ice) and fog under control.

The stadium was one of the two venues for the 2007 IIHF Inline Hockey World Championship , along with the Landshut municipal ice rink .
