The Archbishop's Edith-Stein-Gymnasium Munich (short: ESG ) is a Catholic girls high school in the Munich district of Haidhausen . The linguistic , scientific-technological and economic and social science grammar school is a private, state-recognized substitute school sponsored by the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising . The name giver and patroness of the school is Saint Edith Stein .

history

The school was founded in 1847 in Niederviehbach, Lower Bavaria, as a boarding school for "middle-class girls". The school sponsor and location was the Dominican convent of St. Maria .

In 1967 the company moved to the grounds of the Archdiocese in Munich in the vicinity of the Catholic Foundation College . School girls from the upper school of Niederviehbach also went to Munich to go to boarding school and passed their Abitur exams in 1970. The grammar school initially had a social science and linguistic orientation, the natural science branch was added later. In the 1980s the building was enlarged to accommodate more female students. In the 1980s and even more so in the 1990s, the proportion of Dominican women among the teaching staff decreased significantly; there were now more and more secular teachers.

On January 1, 2000, the ESG became the responsibility of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising for financial reasons .

School offer

At the grammar school there is a linguistic, a scientific-technological and an economic and social science branch. Students in the language branch are taught English, Latin and French. In the scientific and technological branch, instead of the third foreign language, the students receive more instruction in physics, chemistry and computer science. In the economic and social science branch with a social science profile, the third foreign language is replaced by the subjects chemistry, home economics, social studies and a three-week social internship. For the fifth grade, the high school offers a theater class.

In the fifth grade, female pupils can take part in the elective learning technique to impart learning, memory and organizational techniques. Like at any other Bavarian school, religion is a compulsory subject. Catholic and Protestant religious instruction is given, but no ethics instruction . In addition, other elective courses such as Italian, Spanish, Taekwondo , volleyball, basketball, swimming, school newspaper, school medical services, school games, spelling training for fifth graders, lower and upper school choirs, school orchestras and individual lessons for violin and cello are offered.

Via the school medical service , the pupils can participate in a medical training course in cooperation with the Malteser Hilfsdienst , which includes a first- aid course (eight double hours ), a medical assistant course (twelve double hours) and a course to become an ambulance worker (80 double hours and 160 hours of internship) and a subsequent one advanced course to become a paramedic (20 double hours and 160 hours of internship).

Student exchange

The grammar school maintains student exchange programs with the following partner schools:

Projects

As part of the basic socio-practical education in grade ten, the students can take part in the following projects during a three-week internship:

  • Senior project
  • Disability project
  • Homeless project
  • Hospital project
  • Kindergarten and other social institutions.

A two-year Comenius project was carried out with a Hungarian, a French, a Scottish and a Slovenian school. This created very good contacts with these schools, and the participating pupils were able to gain valuable experience. Further projects of this type are being planned.

Day boarding school

The day boarding school expands the offer for the pupils of the lower grades (5th - 7th grade) to an open all-day school. For a limited number of girls, there are places with lunch, learning support from specialist teachers, homework and leisure support.

School trips

In the fifth grade there are two-day introductory days in Gelbenholzen . In the 6th grade, there is a school campus stay in Benediktbeuern . In the 7th grade there is a trip to the ski camp, in the 8th grade there is two orientation days outside the home. Various school trips take place in the 10th grade and Q11. For the pupils who cannot finance these trips themselves, the parents' council pays either part or all of the costs.
