Egil á Bø (born April 2, 1974 as Egil Zachariassen ) is a former Faroese soccer player and plays for EB / Streymur . Previously, he also ran for the Faroese national team .

society

Egil á Bø began his career as a right-footed defender at ÍF Streymur . He played his first competitive game in the second round of the cup in a 2-1 defeat by TB Tvøroyri . In the second division he played 17 of 18 games over the course of the year, his first of a total of three goals he scored on the second day of the game in a 1-0 away win against SÍ Sørvágur . The season was finished in penultimate place, due to the worse goal difference, relegation to the third division was determined. After the merger of the club with EB Eiði , he played from 1993 for the newly created club EB / Streymur again in the second division and was one of the regular players there. At the end of the season, as a runner-up, promotion to the first division could be achieved.

After his first season in the major league, Á Bø moved in 1995 to league rivals NSÍ Runavík . With the new club, the season was finished in last place in the table, which is why a year later a new club change was due and Á Bø then ran for ÍF Fuglafjørður for three years . From 1999 he played for B36 Tórshavn . There he was able to win the trophy 1-0 against KÍ Klaksvík in 2001, and later the championship also won the double . He played in a team with Jákup á Borg , Jens Kristian Hansen , Heðin á Lakjuni , John Petersen and Pól Thorsteinsson, among others . Except for a brief return to EB / Streymur in 2003 for a season, he stayed with B36 until 2004. In 2005, however, Á Bø finally returned to his home club.

As the team captain of EB / Streymur, he celebrated his next cup success in 2007. In the following year he repeated this success and also won the double again with the championship. His teammates this year were Arnbjørn Theodor Hansen and Mikkjal Thomassen , among others . In the summer of 2009 he resigned after differences with coach Sigfríður Clementsen and missed the lost cup final on July 29th against Víkingur Gøta . The reason was that Á Bø had announced that he would not play after the season, whereupon the coach left him on the bench more and more often and built younger players into the team. After a coach change, he returned to the team, but in the autumn still considered whether he would end his career. His team had finished the season after a bad start with 22 points from the last nine games as second in the league . In 2010, the cup could be won again by a 1-0 against ÍF Fuglafjørður, which was the third triumph in four years in this competition. In the following year HB Tórshavn was defeated as the reigning Faroese champion in the game for the Supercup 2-0, and in the new edition of the cup final against ÍF Fuglafjørður the renewed victory. In 2012, the success in the Supercup could be repeated with a 2-1 win against previous year's champions B36 Tórshavn, and Jónhard Frederiksberg and Arnbjørn Theodor Hansen also won the championship again, while the cup final was lost on penalties against Víkingur Gøta, Á Bø only sat on the bench. In 2013 there was a new edition of the final, which was lost again with 0: 2. In the 2015 season he was mainly used for the second team in the 2nd Deild , in the first division Á Bø only played three games. Both the first and the second team were relegated at the end of the season. In the next two years he was sporadically for the second team in the third division, then again in 2019 for the third team, scoring six goals in 12 games.

European Cup

17 times Á Bø played in European Cups, but he failed to score. He played his first game in 1999/2000 for B36 Tórshavn in the UEFA Cup against MKE Ankaragücü when he came on for Øssur Hansen in the 80th minute . The game ended in a 0-1 away defeat. The second leg was also lost 0: 1 without Á Bøs involved, which eliminated B36. He made his last appearance in the 5-1 win in the second leg against FC Lusitanos in the second qualifying round of the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League .

National team

Á Bø's national team career started late - he was 34 years and 5 months old when he was first called up in August 2008. He made his debut in central defense - as did goalkeeper René Tórgarð , Leif Niclasen as left defender and midfielders Bogi Løkin and Andreas Lava Olsen - on August 20, 2008 in the 5-0 defeat in the friendly against Portugal in Aveiro . He is also the oldest debutant ever for the Faroese national team. He scored his only goal for the national team on October 14, 2009 in Piatra Neamț in the World Cup qualification in the 3-1 defeat against Romania , Á Bø scored the 2-1. At the end of 2010, he announced his retirement from the national team after 14 games. He played his last game on October 8, 2010 in the 5-1 defeat in the European Championship qualifier against Slovenia in Ljubljana . At the age of 36 years and 6 months he was the oldest field player used and also, at the age of 35 years and 6 months, the oldest goalscorer in the history of the Faroese national team.
