Sleet is a Founded in 1995, German dark metal - band from the Thuringian town of Tambach-Dietharz . With their morbid , German-language lyrics, the band drew the attention of the BPjM after a while , which led to the indexing of three of their albums.

Band history

Michael "Blutkehle" Roth in Berlin, 2015

1995–1998: formation of the band and first recordings

The individual band members were already musically active before the freezing rain, for example Yantit and Berg Morbach were active in the band Necrotikissme before that, while Bursche Lenz made a demo recording with a band called Amenthes , but the project never became well known and did not publish anything. Theresa Trenks joined the band directly from music school in 1998 . Before Eisregen, Roth himself was active in various unknown grindcore bands until he made the demo recording Mysteries of the Night together with J. Vincent in 1995 under the project name Eisregen . Later, the core of the band was formed, which recorded a promo cassette in 1996 and Das Ende des Weges in 1997 , with which the band finally got the record deal. The band originally performed with Corpsepaint , but quickly put it down:

“At first we felt very connected to Black Metal , which of course also included Corpse Paint for the first four or five gigs. But the band's development led in a different direction - and with that the make-up pots were shelved. "

1998–2001: first albums

After the first demos, the debut album Zerfall was released in April 1998 , which was still clearly influenced by Black Metal. In the same year, the second, musically more demanding album Krebskolonie with Theresa “2T” Trenks was released and with it the viola accompaniment that would later be typical for Eisregen . On this one, the lyrics were both deeper and more morbid.

In 1999 the EP Fleischfestival was released as a foretaste for a new album , on which newly recorded versions of older songs can be found; Trenks also participated in this. The Leichenlager album followed in 2000. In contrast to its two predecessors, the viola was now used more intensively and the music as a whole was designed in a calmer variety. Up until then, Leichenlager was the band's most commercially successful album.

In 2001, Last Episode, the band's record label, went bankrupt. The album Farbenfinsternis , which according to M. Roth would be the most brutal work to date, was released in 2001.

2001–2004: Last Episode insolvency and indexing

Shortly after the release of the new album, Last Episode had to file for bankruptcy. As a result, record sales dropped, so the band members took a break before concerts were played again a year later. In addition, indexing applications for cancer colony (2003) and color eclipse (2004) were submitted and approved by the BPjM.

In contrast to the "normal" indexing (that is: advertising ban and sales ban to minors), the album Krebskolonie was indexed and assigned to list B. This means that according to the (albeit legally non-binding) assessment of the Federal Inspectorate, it has content that is relevant to criminal law. A district court has not yet decided on the criminal relevance. After the indexing, the band did not play any title from this album even at concerts with an audience of at least 18 years of age. The reason for the indexing was the "cruel, inhuman, misogynistic and brutalizing" texts according to the BPjM, which were also "socially ethically disorienting". It was also said that the lyrics represented a "danger to young people" and a "violation of human dignity". The band could not take action against the indexing, because their record company Last Episode was written to, but the band was not informed.

In interviews, the group tried to make it clear that the allegations in the indexing reports did not match the intentions of the singer and lyricist Michael Roth. With the indexing of the album Farbenfinsternis on February 28, 2004, the band with Krebskolonie lost two of their most important works for the German market.

2004 – today

The album Wundwasser was released in 2004 under the new label Massacre Records after the debut album Zerfall including Das Ende des Weges was remastered and re-released.

Michael "Blutkehle" Roth in 2005 during the freezing rain performance at the Wacken Open Air

In 2005, in the year of the 10th anniversary of the band, another EP was released with Hexenhaus , which was supposed to be a foretaste of the band's sixth album and included new songs as well as newly recorded versions of old songs. In addition, a DVD was included with the band's first music video (for Elektro-Hexe ).

On January 31, 2007, the album Wundwasser was presented to the Federal Inspectorate on the basis of a suggestion from the Brandenburg State Office of Criminal Investigation . The reason for the indexing is "content that is harmful to minors and punishable by law". On February 1, 2007 the album was indexed. The BPjM could not find sufficient artistic content, so the protection of minors was more important than freedom of art.

Franzi Brink became a member of the band in 2007 and left them in 2015. Here at a performance in Rostock, 2012

Blutbahnen was released on April 27, 2007. The EP Eine Receive, with mostly alternative versions of songs from the Blutbahnen album, followed on June 22, 2007. With the EP Eine Receive, the band also achieved their only single chart placement (No. 100 on 6. June 2007). A requested indexing of blood vessels was rejected. The music on blood vessels is much more melodic than its predecessor and successor albums.

On September 19, 2008 the album Knochenkult was released , in which harder sounds played a more dominant role. The melodic influence was still noticeable, however. All the songs on the second album were changed musically and lyrically and were given different titles. At two concerts, all songs were played in the order of the album. The two concerts formed the basis for the double live CD Bühnenblut , which was released on May 25, 2009.

On April 30, 2010 the album Schlangensonne was released. The cover shows a picture of Jesus on the cross with female breasts . A clear return to higher guitar use can be seen on the album, which was already evident with Knochenkult . The keyboard is still used for melodic support and there are some clear vocal parts. Thematically, the album deals with the Second World War in two songs . Forever Eastern Front describes the end of the life of a German soldier in the war against Russia (similar to Iron Cross warriors on blood vessels ), whereas Death descends describes the bombing of Dresden by Great Britain. At the beginning of the song, a scene from the film The Hills Run Red was cut into N8verzehr , the plot of the text being more like Hansel and Gretel ; Here a married couple eats children that are kept in the cellar.

Rostrot was released on December 9, 2011. Shortly before, on December 2, 2011, the EP Madenreich was released. The title song of the EP represents one of the band's quieter pieces in terms of music style. The CD insert of the 76th issue of Legacy magazine, which was released on December 28, 2011, contained a preliminary version of the song Tot / Untot .

Bassist "West" has been a member of the band since 2012 (here 2015)

On December 7th, 2012 the compilation Krebskollektion appeared . On the first sound carrier of the 2-CD release, individual songs from earlier, indexed albums were re-released in remastered versions; among other things, in order to be able to include them in the live repertoire again . In addition to the new titles Engelmacher and Brut , the second CD also contains the Falco cover Mutter, the man with the coke . Almost a year after the release of Krebskollektion , the new and 10th album Todestage was announced for October 25, 2013 . Shortly before it was released, the album had to be postponed. The record company Massacre Records cited a production error as the reason for the postponement. The new release date for the album with an alternative CD cover was November 15, 2013. In the new release of November 15, 2013, the cover was replaced with the flute mongo and the track of the same name was removed from the album. However, an unknown number of albums of the original version were already sold on the original date, October 25, 2013. The music style in Todestage is a combination of the styles of the previous and new albums. On the one hand, the viola is used again and the singing is almost exclusively guttural. On the other hand, the melodic passages of more recent works are also included. Thematically, the album deals, among other things, with the criticism of the current TV landscape ( DSDSL - Germany is looking for the super body ) and describes in Long Live the Needle “that excessive drug use leads to the end of one's own existence and only the needle itself in a two-way relationship remains. ". A stylistically untypical song for Eisregen is midnight , which has similarities to Rammstein's style. The digipack bonus song is an alternate version of Midnight , which was sung by M. Roth's 10-year-old son Quentin and is about Iron Man . On April 25, 2014, the band released their fourth EP with Flötefreunde on Massacre Records . It contains a revised version of the of death days Songs remote Flötenmongo entitled thousand Schweiner .

On May 5, 2017, the album Fleischfilm was released , a concept album which is thematically mainly dedicated to the Italian horror film of the 1980s. Some well-known strips Naked and Mangled ( Ruggero Deodato ), The House on the Cemetery Wall and The Syndicate of Horror ( Lucio Fulci ), The Devil's Saw ( Sergio Martino ), Sado - Open the gate to hell and Man-Eater - The man eater ( Joe D'Amato ), In Satan's Bloodlust ( Mario Bava ), The horror comes at night ( Renato Polselli ), Satan of vengeance ( Antonio Margheriti ), Rosso - the color of death , Tenebrae and Dario Argento's “Mother Trilogy” ( Suspiria , Horror Infernal and The Mother of Tears ), as well as The Uncanny Eye ( Lamberto Bava ) were edited and retold in freezing rain style. The band combines their sound with that of the respective original soundtrack.

On June 8, 2018, the mini-LP Satan Loves you was released , which contains, among other things, two songs ( Menschenmetzger Fritz and Onkel Fritze ) that retell the deeds of serial killer Fritz Haarmann , as well as a cover version of the song For God Your Soul by Pungent Stench . The LP was considered a foretaste of the album Purgatory, which was released at the end of the year .

Almost two years later, on the occasion of the band's 25th anniversary, the 14th album Leblos was released on June 18, 2020 . On June 19, 2020, the EP Die Räudigen Rennsteigrebellen with 4 drinking and celebration songs is to be released on record . The EP will also be included with the album Leblos as a bonus CD . One day after the release of Leblos on June 20, 2020, the original plan was to record a live album called Heimatfest on the occasion of the band's anniversary at Club From Hell in Erfurt-Bindersleben , which was to be released on DVD and CD later that year . However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this live recording has been postponed for one year to summer 2021.

Texts

The texts of Eisregen are partly shaped by horror and splatter films , but also by historical events and criminal cases.

The song Ripper von Rostow deals with the slightly modified story of the Russian serial killer Andrei Romanowitsch Tschikatilo , Kreuznarbe the cruel interrogations and procedures of the Inquisition , army of rats the time of National Socialism and Iron Cross Warriors the horror of the battle of Stalingrad , where a soldier has to eat his comrade to survive in the cold of Russia.

In contrast, the song 17 candles at the cathedral is the first song of the group that tells a true story unchanged. It describes the rampage of Erfurt Robert Steinhäuser , who killed 16 people and himself at his grammar school. According to Roth, the song was researched on the basis of police reports.

In addition, some texts are critical of religion or even purely blasphemous in nature. Already on the first demo, Mysteries of the Night, which was limited to one copy, there is a song with the title That you adore a dead beggar . In the song Ode to Decline , Jesus of Nazareth is referred to as a bastard .

Side projects

Michael Roth and Michael Lenz as well as some fellow musicians started the death metal project Eisblut in 2004 , the album Schlachtwerk was released at the end of August 2005. Ronny Fimmel and Theresa Trenks founded the band Transilvanian Beat Club in 2005 . Since 1999 there has also been a band called Ewigheim , in which Ronny Fimmel played as a permanent member and Theresa Trenks and Michael Roth as guest musicians.

Until January 2005 Ronny Fimmel played with Berg Morbach in the death art combo Necrotikissme (since summer 2004 Necro & Gesocks), which had existed since 1992, i.e. before freezing rain.

Michael Roth founded the dark metal project Marienbad with Yantit . The debut album was released on May 27, 2011 under the title Werk I: Nachtfall .

There was also a project called Panzerkreutz, which contributed two pieces to the 2010 four- fold split CD Thuringian Supremacy Vol 1 (together with Goatfuneral, Dies Fyck and Occulta) and was then dissolved again.
