Elze is a district of the municipality of Wedemark in the Hanover region , about 25 km north of Hanover city center.

geography

The place is adjacent to Meitze and Hellendorf in the south, Bennemühlen and Oegenbostel in the west and the northern parts of Plumhof , Berkhof and Hoheheide. In the east, behind Autobahn 7, lies the Rundshorn Forest .

history

  • The townscape is characterized by some farmhouses and courtyards in the old town center, but numerous courtyards have already given way to newer developments. The newest settlement areas can be found in the north and on the site of the old sawmill near the train station.
  • East of the town behind the Autobahn 7 is the Elze-Berkhof waterworks , which went into operation in 1911 and which today contributes around half of the water supply in the Hanover region.
  • A large part of the Elzer area consists of forest and meadows, including the approximately 400 hectare forest area of ​​the Rundshorn forest, which is also to the east .

Companies

Elze owns numerous craft businesses. It had its own sawmill until the 1990s. Multi-family houses have now been built there. There is an industrial area on the northern edge of the village on the L 190.

The number of specialist shops that used to be numerous in the town has declined sharply in recent decades. Some of these shops have moved to the new shopping centers near the train station, others have been closed. Two discounter supermarkets have replaced the original grocery store in 2001/2002 and ensure basic supplies. There are also two restaurants, a base fire brigade with three vehicles, a post office, a travel agency, various small businesses, a hotel that particularly benefits from visitors to the Hanover Fair , as well as dentists and general practitioners and a pharmacy.

Since 1990 there has been a trade association with 42 members. Since 2005, a business fair has been held every two years with companies from the municipality of Wedemark. The number of visitors averages 25,000. The business fair with more than 150 exhibitors has a national character.
