Emil Paul Julius Louis Freiherr von Meerscheidt-Hüllessem (born April 14, 1840 in Stargard , † October 21, 1923 in Eberswalde ) was a Prussian infantry general .

Life

Emil was the son of Major a. D. , last in the 21st Infantry Regiment , Paul Wilhelm von Meerscheidt-Hüllessem (1791–1848) and his second wife Dominicella Elwine, born von Blomberg (1808–1877). His two stepbrothers were the later Prussian infantry general Oskar von Meerscheidt-Hüllessem (1825–1895) and the later lieutenant general Hermann von Meerscheidt-Hüllessem (1830–1899).

Military career

Meerscheidt-Hüllessem attended high school in his hometown and was then a cadet in Kulm and Berlin . On May 2, 1857, he was transferred to the 9th Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army as a characterized Portepeefähnrich . In mid-January 1858 Meerscheidt-Hüllessem received the patent for this rank and in December of the same year was promoted to second lieutenant . As such, he was in the main battalion of the 9th Landwehr Regiment from February to mid-June 1860, and then commanded as a battalion adjutant to the 9th Combined Infantry Regiment. On July 1, 1860, he was transferred to the newly established Infantry Regiment No. 49 . Here Meerscheidt-Hüllessem acted as adjutant of the 2nd battalion. As a prime lieutenant he was on the occasion of the German War in 1866 with the regiment's replacement battalion, but did not take any active part in combat operations. Transferred to Infantry Regiment No. 76 on October 30, 1866 , Meerscheidt-Hüllessem was in command of the General Command of the X Army Corps from December 19, 1866 to October 1, 1867 .

On June 18, 1869, Meerscheidt-Hüllessem joined the Navy , joined the Sea Battalion and on October 1, 1869 was promoted to captain to company commander. During the war against France in 1870/71 , he and his 5th company were entrusted exclusively with security measures at home. In March / April 1872 Meerscheidt-Hüllessem acted as the leader of the teaching department of the main division of the Baltic Sea Fleet and was in command of the Schleswig-Holstein Infantry Regiment No. 86 on the occasion of the autumn exercises of the 18th division in August and September of the following year . On October 1, 1874, he was given command of the 1st Company of the Sea Battalion. From May to September 1875 he was in command as leader of a detachment on board the tank frigate SMS König Wilhelm .

On May 18, 1876 he returned from the Imperial Navy to the Prussian Army and was employed as a company commander in the 4th East Prussian Grenadier Regiment No. 5 in Danzig . In this capacity, promoted to major on August 12, 1879, Meerscheidt-Hüllessem was transferred to the newly formed Infantry Regiment No. 128 , also stationed in Danzig, on April 1, 1881 as a regular staff officer . From November 15, 1883, he was employed as a commander of the fusilier battalion in Infantry Regiment No. 76 in Lübeck . With his promotion to lieutenant colonel , Meerscheidt-Hüllessem came to Altona as a regular staff officer in the 1st Thuringian Infantry Regiment No. 31 . On May 22, 1889, when he was promoted to colonel, he was appointed commander of the infantry regiment "Graf Bülow von Dennewitz" (6th Westphalian) No. 55 . Meerscheidt-Hüllessem was then as major general from May 17, 1892 to February 5, 1896 commander of the 42nd Infantry Brigade in Frankfurt am Main . He was then promoted to lieutenant general and commanded the 11th division in Breslau . Meerscheidt-Hüssellem married Luise Johanna Freiin Hiller von Gaertringen (1842–1917) on September 30, 1865 in Groß-Kloina . She was the daughter of the secret government and district administrator Moritz von Leipziger . Several children were born from the marriage.
