The Estonian football championship was played for the 20th time in 1942 as the highest Estonian football division of men. In June 1941 the German Wehrmacht had started Operation Barbarossa , which is why there was no gaming operation in 1941. In 1942 the championship was held under German occupation. In the 1942 season, after a qualifying round that was divided into four groups, 5 clubs competed against each other in 16 of a total of 20 planned games. Each team should play once at home and away against every other team. However, it was canceled during the finals. The Tartu PS (Tartu Politsei Spordiring) was thereby prematurely Estonian champions.
In the first round, the winners could qualify for the finals. The first round was divided into the groups North (Põhja), South (Lõuna), East (Ida) and Central Estonia (Kesk). Clubs in bold could qualify.
