The 1992 Meistriliiga was the first official season of the Estonian men's top division of football after independence from the Soviet Union . The season was played in the spring of 1992 and continued with the 1992/93 season after the Estonian Football Association switched the system from the calendar year rhythm to autumn / spring.

Season course

Location of the Meistriliiga clubs in 1992

The league consisted of 14 teams, the champions were FC Norma Tallinn . JK Tulevik Viljandi and FK Maardu were relegated to the Esiliiga . The JK Maag Tartu remained first class after the relegation against Narva Kreenholm .

The championship was initially divided into groups East and West. Each team competed once against each other team. After 6 games in which all teams competed against each other once in their region, the league was divided into two groups with the eight best and six worse teams. Then the teams of the respective groups played against each other once (championship round, relegation round). The first in the championship round was the Estonian soccer champion . In the 1992/93 Champions League season , Norma Tallinn failed in the preliminary round to NK Olimpija Ljubljana .

The bottom of the table in the relegation round FK Maardu rose directly to the Esiliiga, the bottom of the table JK Maag Tartu played in the relegation. Since JK Vaprus Pärnu retired before the start of the 1992/93 season , Tulevik Viljandi (sporty relegated) was able to hold the league. The Estonian Football Cup was not played this season.
