The FIFA Club World Cup 2006 ( Engl. : FIFA Club World Cup in 2006 ) was the third edition of this international football competition for club teams and was held from December 10 to 17 again in Japan.

mode

There were no changes to the mode of competition compared to the previous year. The tournament was played again with the winners of the six continental championship competitions at club level from Asia , Africa , the CONCACAF zone , South America , Europe and Oceania in the knockout system . A total of seven games took place in eight days. The teams from Europe and South America were again set for the semi-finals and only played two games each. The other four teams determined the other two participants for the semi-finals in two quarter-finals.

Due to the change of the Australian Football Association from the OFC to the AFC and the resulting lower strength of the OFC clubs, a rule change was proposed in early 2006. The winner of the OFC Champions Cup should play in a preliminary round against the Japanese champions for a place in the quarter-finals. However, this change was initially rejected by the FIFA Executive Committee.
