To create a national flag, a commission was set up in 1958, chaired by the Minister of the Interior, which issued guidelines for a flag that was supposed to be very simple.

The flag won first place in a competition to which 2870 proposals were submitted.

The design came from the local engineering student Taiwo Akinkunmi from Ibadan , who was impressed during a flight over his green homeland. He received a prize of £ 100 for the design.

Akinkunmi originally suggested a red disc in the middle, but the selection committee removed it.

The colors have the following meanings:

• Green stands for agriculture, the economic backbone of the country.
• White represents peace and unity.
