The airport Forli ( ital .: Aeroporto di Forlì "Luigi Ridolfi" ) is an Italian airport at Forli . Along with Bologna , Parma and Rimini, it is one of the four commercial airports in the Emilia-Romagna region .

Location and connection

The airport is located around 60 kilometers southeast of the regional capital Bologna and around 20 kilometers west of the Adriatic coast .

The airport is located one and a half kilometers southeast of the center of Forlì. Regular buses run five to seven times a day between the airport and the main train station in the city center. Forlì is on the Bologna – Ancona railway line and the parallel Adriatic A14 motorway and state road 9 . Buses also connect the airport with the resorts of Cervia and Cesenatico .

Airlines and destinations

The airport was a base for the Italian airline Wind Jet until 2011 . Also Ryanair was a major user. On March 31, 2013, the last airline, Wizz Air, also withdrew. Since then, Forlì no longer has a scheduled connection to international air traffic (as of September 2013).

Forlì airport has been in fierce competition with the nearby Rimini airport for years. One airport would be sufficient for the catchment area of the two airports on the Adriatic coast of Emilia-Romagna. However, neither of the two airport operators wants to accept the closure of the respective airport. Recently, Forlì has lost market share compared to Bologna Airport in the northwest and Rimini in the southeast. Despite plans for synergistic use and a possible concentration on the air freight segment , the future of the airport is uncertain.

Others

The airport and the city of Forlì have long been the location of aeronautical training facilities and the location of the 13th Carabinieri helicopter unit ( 13º nucleo elicotteristi dell'arma dei Carabinieri ).

In 1934 the Collegio Aeronautico was founded here, an educational institution of the fascist youth organization. In 1968, one of the few Italian technical colleges specializing in aeronautics ( Istituto Tecnico Aeronautico ) was established in Forlì . At the airport there is, among other things, a flight school and an academy at which prospective air traffic controllers from the Italian air navigation service provider ENAV SpA are trained.

The airport is named after the bomber pilot Luigi Ridolfi, born in Forlì in 1894, who died in 1919 as a civilian test pilot near Milan .
