Friedrich Vordemberge-Gildewart (born November 17, 1899 in Osnabrück as Friedrich Vordemberge , † December 19, 1962 in Ulm ) was a German graphic artist , painter and sculptor . Vordemberge-Gildewart's artistic work is characterized by diversity. He not only created paintings , but also reliefs , collages and photomontages . In addition, he worked as a typographer , theater and stage painter, furniture designer and interior designer. His estate, consisting of works of art, written and photographic documents and the artist's library, has been in the Wiesbaden Museum since 1997 .

He expanded his birth name Vordemberge to Vordemberge-Gildewart in order to differentiate himself from his cousin Friedrich Vordemberge , who was two years older than him. Gildewart was the name of the old town street in Osnabrück, where he grew up. Friedrich Vordemberge-Gildewart was born in 1906 in the Ev. Boys started secondary school in Osnabrück . He began his professional activity with a carpenter apprenticeship in the woodworking Julius Schütze. From 1919 he studied architecture, sculpture and painting at the Technical University in Hanover . Vordemberge-Gildewart worked on the avant-garde magazine Der Sturm in Hanover .

Vordemberge-Gildewart began his artistic work between 1919 and 1922 with abstract reliefs and collages, and since 1923 with painting. In Hanover there were encounters and exchanges with the artists Kurt Schwitters , Oskar Schlemmer , Wassily Kandinsky and Hans Arp . In 1923 Vordemberge-Gildewart studied one semester in bookbinding at the Bauhaus in Weimar . In 1924 he founded the artist group : Gruppe K with Hans Nitzschke . Also in 1924 he met Theo van Doesburg in Hanover. He offered him membership in the De Stijl group, which he accepted.

In 1927 Friedrich Vordemberge-Gildewart founded the abstract hannover , together with Kurt Schwitters, Hans Nitzschke, Carl Buchheister and Rudolf Jahns . The abstract hannover were a local group of the International Association of Expressionists , Futurists , Cubists and Constructivists . In 1932 Vordemberge-Gildewart became a member of the artist group Abstraction-Création . The artist group was founded by Naum Gabo , Antoine Pevsner , Auguste Herbin , Theo van Doesburg and Georges Vantongerloo in Paris.

In 1936 he moved to Berlin. His art was considered "degenerate" under the National Socialist regime . He therefore decided to emigrate and in 1937 went into exile first in Switzerland and then in Amsterdam , where he also made contact with Max Beckmann and other emigrants. He lived and worked in Amsterdam until 1954. Before the outbreak of war in 1939, Friedrich Vordemberge-Gildewart participated in several important international exhibitions in New York, Paris and London. In 1954 he was appointed to the Ulm School of Design . Friedrich Vordemberge-Gildewart worked there as head of the visual communication department until his death on December 19, 1962.

Vordemberge-Gildewart was a participant in documenta 1 (1955) and documenta II (1959) in Kassel . He was buried in the Hasefriedhof in his hometown of Osnabrück . She honored him with the Justus Möser Medal .

Vordemberge-Gildewart Foundation

In fulfillment of the testamentary will of the founder Ilse Leda, the wife of Friedrich Vordemberge-Gildewart that in awarding Rapperswil in St. canton of St. Gallen ( Switzerland ) based Foundation since 1983 prizes and scholarships for young artists. The scholarship is one of the highest endowed awards for young art in Europe. Prize winners so far have been Yves Netzhammer , James Aldridge , Volker Lang and Ricarda Roggan, among others . The jury meets annually at a different location to examine the works of artists from the respective region and to select one or more award winners and scholarship holders from among them.

Estate in the Wiesbaden Museum

Thanks to the Vordemberge-Gildewart Foundation in Rapperswil, the artist's estate has been in the Wiesbaden Museum since 1997 .

Vordemberge-Gildewart-Initiative (Osnabrück)

In 2005, citizens of Osnabrück joined forces to form the Vordemberge Gildewart Initiative. In addition, the Lord Mayor of Osnabrück has taken over the patronage. Since then, a network has been built up to initiate exhibitions, performances, lecture series and projects in conjunction with the city's cultural and educational institutions, the University of Osnabrück , the Osnabrück Community Foundation and national institutions and experts. From December 2012 to the end of 2013 a VG year will be held in Osnabrück on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of death in December 2012. Exhibitions, a film program and various educational programs will be offered. In addition, at the initiative's request, in cooperation with the city of Osnabrück, a film project by and with young people from Osnabrück about Vordemberge's life has come about.

Vordemberge-Gildewart Gallery (Osnabrück)

The Vordemberge-Gildewart gallery (VG gallery) is located in the house in which Friedrich Vordemberge-Gildewart was born at Große Gildewart 27 in Osnabrück. The VG initiative has set itself the task of raising the awareness of the city and its visitors to the Osnabrück background of this internationally renowned artist. This does not happen through the exhibition of the works themselves (which are currently hanging in the Felix-Nussbaum-Haus in Osnabrück), but rather twice a year through the presentation of aspects of the work, living conditions, contemporary witnesses and documents; but especially through the presentation of personalities and artists who feel committed to the work and afterlife of Vordemberge-Gildewart's art. Dietrich Helms, Jürgen Paas , Norbert Thomas, Jo Niemeyer , Uli Pohl and many others exhibited in the Vordemberge-Gildewart-Galerie .
