This article covers the Czechoslovak national team at the 1982 World Cup in Spain .

qualification

Opponents in qualifying group three were the Soviet Union , Wales , Iceland and Turkey . The qualification was in jeopardy for a long time, only after the 1-1 draw against the Soviet Union on the last day of the match did the European champions from 1976 achieve second place in the group and the associated qualification due to the better goal difference against the Welsh. It was the first World Cup participation since 1970 .

After a disappointing draw against Kuwait and a loss to England, Czechoslovakia would have had to defeat France to make it to the second round. But Didier Six gave the French the lead, and Panenka was able to equalize with a penalty. Thus the Czechoslovaks were eliminated.
