Soccer match Arminia Bielefeld - 1. FC Saarbrücken 1986

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The second division soccer game between Arminia Bielefeld and 1. FC Saarbrücken on October 18, 1986 began with a team that was outnumbered. The Bielefeld team , handicapped by injuries, had to start the championship game of the 2nd Bundesliga in the 1986/87 season with ten instead of the usual eleven players and was further decimated after ten minutes by another injury. Saarbrücken won the game 3-1.

prehistory

Arminia Bielefeld had finished fourth in the preseason and missed promotion to the Bundesliga. Because of financial problems, the club gave up top performers such as Thomas Helmer , Horst Wohlers and Pasi Rautiainen after the season and could only sign young, talented players from the amateur camp. The already small squad was thinned out by numerous injuries. Matthias Westerwinter underwent a jaw operation , goalkeeper Wolfgang Kneib had injured his hand, Dietmar Schacht and Andreas Ridder suffered from minor injuries, while Reiner Maurer had sciatica complaints . Ulrich Büscher , Kazuo Ozaki and Boris Tičić had previously been injured for a long time. In order to avoid further injuries, coach Horst Franz throttled the training in the week before the game.

The day before the game, Thomas Gerstner and Andreas Ellguth also fell out with the flu . So there were only seven professionals available to trainer Franz. Since at that time no more than three amateurs were allowed to play in the first and second Bundesliga games, the Bielefeld club management tried to postpone the game on presentation of medical certificates . The Saarbrücken signaled their consent to postpone the game. However, the German Football Association (DFB) refused to move the game. The set of rules provided for the possibility of postponing the date only in those cases in which all players were unable to play for the same reason. As a precaution, the DFB threatened 1. FC Saarbrücken with a point deduction if Saarbrücken did not play for the game.

Before the game, the Bielefeld team finished 18th, Saarbrücken came in ninth.

The game

Arminia ended up with only ten players, seven of them professionals and three amateurs. The visiting team, however, played with eleven players. 2,600 spectators saw the match led by referee Karl-Heinz Tritschler . After ten minutes, Bielefeld's Thomas Ostermann had to retire injured after a hernia . Since Ostermann was a professional and Arminia was already playing with the maximum of three amateurs allowed, Ostermann could not be replaced.

“We waited the entire first half for Horst Franz to finally bring another player. It wasn't until half-time that we found out: He wasn't allowed. [...] So we were only nine. We felt like gladiators, surrounded by predators. We knew: we can actually throw ourselves in the dust and let ourselves be eaten. Or we fight to the last, and we did. "

- Martin Kollenberg

In the 19th minute of the game, Theo Schneider brought the visiting team into the lead. Several times, spectators only gave the ball back after they had been given an express warning by the stadium announcer. After a set piece, Thomas Sagel equalized shortly before half-time. In the second half, the nine Bielefelds withstood the pressure of the Saarbrücken team for a long time before Zbigniew Kruszyński brought the guests back into the lead in the 78th minute. Five minutes later, Robert Brace scored the 3-1 for Saarbrücken, which was also the final score of the game.

The two amateurs Michael Hausen and Oliver Roggensack , who were substituted on Bielefeld's side , made their only second division appearances at this game.
