GeoGebra ( portmanteau of Geo geometry and Al Gebra ) is a dynamic geometry software (DGS) , adding to their geometric objects not only the usual geometric and algebraic interface provides. Geometric objects can not only be drawn, but also changed by specifying or manipulating equations . In addition to elementary geometric objects, newer versions of GeoGebra also allow the generation of function graphs , plane curves and vectors and have an integrated computer algebra system (CAS) and a spreadsheet .

history

The first version of the program was developed from 2001 to 2002 by the Austrian Markus Hohenwarter as part of his diploma thesis on the subject of " Didactics of Mathematics and Computer Science" at the University of Salzburg and in 2002 won the European Academic Software Award.

From 2003 to 2006, Hohenwarter continued to develop GeoGebra as part of his doctoral thesis on the subject of "Didactics of Mathematics" at the same university, winning five further international prizes. During the same period, the program was translated into 25 other languages.

In 2006, the developer went to Florida Atlantic University and worked there as a post-doc at GeoGebra. A little later, Yves Kreis from the University of Luxembourg joined as a new developer.

In December 2007 the developers founded the International GeoGebra Institute (IGI), which had its first meeting in May 2008 in Cambridge ( England ).

In July 2009 the first international GeoGebra conference took place in Linz .

In 2017 there were 30 million registered users from 190 countries and it was available in 64 language localizations.

Use in schools

GeoGebra can not only be used in geometry, but also in other areas of mathematics such as analysis , linear algebra or stochastics . Since a change in one window, for example geometry, has a dynamic effect on the representations in other windows, for example algebra, GeoGebra is also known as dynamic mathematics software . The majority of GeoGebra is free software . The program is now available in 50 languages.

GeoGebra has already won several prizes, including the European Educational Software Prize in 2002 and the German Educational Software Prize in 2004. Most of the software has been developed since 2001 by Markus Hohenwarter for his thesis and dissertation at the University of Salzburg. GeoGebra is now an international product in which developers from different countries are involved.

The program is available for the Windows , Linux , macOS operating systems and, since September 2013, also for Android and iOS . GeoGebra requires the Java Runtime Environment (JRE). The current version and a pre-release version with the latest developments can be downloaded and used on the homepage via Java Web Start .

Use in exams

GeoGebra is available as an app or website with special capabilities to avoid cheating on exams. The use of your own Linux operating system on a bootable “learning stick” during the exam is particularly low-risk. In addition to the written work, GeoGebra can be used like a pocket calculator (e.g. on a smartphone), or the work is partially or fully created with it.

Since the school year 2012/13, GeoGebra has been tested as an aid for performance assessments at some Bavarian schools. In this context, GeoGebra will also be approved as an aid in the Abitur examination from 2016. In order to prevent misappropriation / cheat sheets , the GeoGebra development team is adapting the learning stick exam environment , which was developed as an open source product by the Northwestern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences and is also maintained from there, for school trials.

GeoGebra is the official tool in Austria for the Reife- und Diplomprüfung (Matura) .

GeoGebraExam Web App (German: GeoGebra Exam Web App ) is a secure exam environment. The application starts a page in Firefox Portable that can only be closed by closing the program. A stopwatch runs from the start, but if a student closes GeoGebraExam to cheat and then opens the program again, the stopwatch on his screen has a lower value than the stopwatches of his classmates. A key lock for the Windows key is also activated when the program is started. The Android app for smartphones works in a very similar way to the web app.

Software capabilities

GeoGebra can display both geometric constructions on an empty work surface and function graphs in a coordinate system. With the help of sliders that can be placed anywhere, the size of parameters can be varied easily in the so-called pull mode and the changes triggered by this can be viewed dynamically.

GeoGebra differs from other interactive geometry programs in that it is the only program that displays an algebraic definition for all mathematical objects.

The user can use various setting options to influence the type of display. For example, points can be specified and displayed as Cartesian coordinates , complex numbers or polar coordinates .

From version 3.2 a spreadsheet is also included which, in addition to the usual capabilities of such a program, offers collaboration with the drawing sheet. Numbers can be read from a drawing and objects can be branched from the table.

From version 4.2 GeoGebra not only offers an algebraic interface to the geometric objects, but also access to the internal computer algebra system MPReduce via a separate console interface ; this was replaced by Giac from version 4.4 .

From version 5.0 the program also masters three-dimensional geometry.

In version 6.0 the surface of the desktop version was adapted to the browser version.

License

GeoGebra is free for non-commercial use. Commercial use of the program is only permitted if license fees are paid. Part of the program is available as Free Software under the GNU General Public License , but the installation program and language files are licensed under commercial licenses and are therefore not Free Software. By outsourcing a few but important components of the software with this special non-free license, the character of the GPL is undermined and prevents the software from being distributed e.g. B. through some Linux distributions.
