Georg Zanger

Georg Zanger (born May 15, 1947 ) is an Austrian lawyer . He is one of the most prominent business lawyers and defense lawyers in the republic, who also campaigns publicly against right-wing extremism .

Life

Georg Zanger is of Jewish origin. Two aunts and one cousin died in Nazi concentration camps. He was born in 1947 as the son of the lawyer Jakob Zanger. His father was a KPÖ member and resistance fighter who fought in Austria as a soldier in the British Army .

After graduating from the Bundesrealgymnasium Wien 1 in 1965 , Georg Zanger studied law at the University of Vienna from 1965 to 1970 . It was there that he was promoted to Dr. jur. PhD . From 1970 to 1975 he was a trainee lawyer in his father's office. Due to his initially communist convictions, he was not allowed to become a judge in Austria . From 2003 to 2005 he completed an Executive MBL-HSG in business law at the University of St. Gallen . In 2004 he studied mediation at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Zanger was a lecturer a. a. at the Universities of Salzburg and Vienna and author of specialist legal books. Since 1977 he has been working primarily as a business and human rights lawyer on the Neuer Markt in Vienna and a court-sworn expert on copyright issues .

Known cases

One of his cases was against the Kronen Zeitung in the Lainz case in 1989. He also represented a. a. interests as a lawyer: 1991 of the convicted rapist Otto Muehl , 1994 of the convicted serial killer Jack Unterweger , 1995 the law student and ex-lover of Udo Jürgens , Sabrina Burda, in questions of maintenance and visits to the common illegitimate daughter, 2000 of former Polish slave laborers from the time of National Socialism, 2001/02 the relatives of the Nigerian asylum seeker Marcus Omofuma , 2007 the father in the Luca case , 2009 Wolfgang Purtscheller in a dispute over the history of the KPÖ, 2010 the Thomas Sessler Verlag regarding the change in the national anthem and since 2012 of the founder Gertrud Meschar .

Georg Zanger, who is regarded as a left-wing lawyer, took legal action against right-wing student associations and magazines in the 1970s . He campaigns against right-wing extremist tendencies in and around the so-called Third Camp . In 1985 he belonged with Otto Bruckner ( KJÖ ), Alfred Gusenbauer ( SJ ) and Gabriel Lansky to the four-member coordination committee of the committee “For a Democratic Anti-Fascist Austria”, which opposed the candidacy of FPÖ member Otto Scrinzi as Federal President . Zanger accused the Viennese judicial authorities of being " blind in the right eye "; He sees deficits in dealing with right-wing radicalism at the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution and Combating Terrorism . In 2010, he sued 56 people and organizations from an alleged right-wing network, to which several leading FPÖ politicians (including Heinz-Christian Strache and Martin Graf ), the magazine Die Aula and the Deutsche Kulturwerk Europäische Geist are supposed to belong, for inciting and educating a criminal Association . After a press conference on the "spider web of right-wing extremism", he was attacked by his opponents and accused of blanket denunciation of people. Two years later the proceedings in Graz were discontinued. In 2011 he took action against the FPÖ Federal Councilor Werner Königshofer because of his contacts to the right-wing extremist blog Alpen-Donau.info . Due to the controversial Facebook publication in 2012 of a caricature interpreted as anti-Semitic by FPÖ federal party leader Heinz-Christian Strache and the right-wing extremist comments from some users of the community, Zanger reported the operator of the site.

Private

Georg Zanger lives in Vienna. He has been married three times and has four children. The divorce of his last marriage was fought out in public media by both parties as a kind of "war of the roses" because his wife untruthfully accused him of bodily harm . The events led to the intervention of the Ministry of Justice in 2006 and the retirement of a Viennese public prosecutor.

In 2008, the two children of Zanger's son Sascha, who had joint custody , were kidnapped by his divorced wife to Brazil . There they were mistreated by their mother's sister and a cousin, with Zanger's then four-year-old granddaughter killed in 2009. Sascha Zanger dealt with the case in the book “Only the doll stayed” .
