The General Association of the German Insurance Industry ( GDV ) is the umbrella organization for private insurance companies in Germany . President of the GDV is Wolfgang Weiler (took office on September 26, 2017). The GDV was founded in Cologne in 1948 and is currently based in Berlin. The association has around 460 member companies with around 214,000 employees and trainees who, with almost 438 million insurance contracts, offer private households, industry, trade and public institutions risk protection and provision options.

The association's task is to represent insurance companies in relation to political and social institutions ( lobbying ). Through GDV Dienstleistungs-GmbH (GDV DL) as the central IT service provider for the insurance industry, branch services are designed, developed and operated in Hamburg, as well as the technical processing of the electronic insurance confirmation (eVB) between the Federal Motor Transport Authority and the German insurance industry, the Zentralruf the car insurer and the emergency call of the car insurer (operation of the emergency telephones on federal motorways ). Development of the GDV

The association was founded in 1948 as an industry representative for cross-sectoral issues. In addition, there were initially several professional associations. Georg Büchner served from 1979 to 1993 . In 1995, the Association of Transport Insurers, the Association of Insurers and the HUK-Verband joined initially to Association of insurance companies together. In 1996 the Association of Non- Life Insurers merged with the Association of Life Insurers and the GDV to form the new General Association of the German Insurance Industry.
