Lazarist Church (Graz)
The Lazarist Church of the Sorrowful Mother or Marienkirche or Church of the Sorrowful Mother is a Roman Catholic church in the fourth district of Lend in Graz . It is the parish church of the Graz-painful mother parish (Marienpfarre) in the dean's office Graz-Nord of the city church Graz , and monastery church of the mission house of the Lazarists Graz , provincialate and study house (clergy) of the order. Immediately next to the church is the convent of the Sisters of Mercy Graz (Vinzentinen, Daughters of Love) .
history
The male order of the Lazarists settled in the Grazer Bahnhofsviertel in the second half of the 19th century and dedicated itself to the pastoral care of the poor.
Mission house of the Lazarists
The mission office consists of two buildings:
- The Provincial House , until today the seat of the Austrian Order Province . The building, Mariengasse 16, is a listed building
- The Lazarist monastery , Mariengasse 24, is also a listed building - the building housed the Styrian Vocational Promotion Institute (today the BFI Graz West is at the FH Joanneum ). The Caritas has set up a center for learning cafes and other social projects in this building. At the side entrance there is the food outlet for poor people, the so-called Marienstüberl.
Church of the Sorrowful Mother
The church itself was built according to the plans of the architect Friedrich von Schmidt , who also designed the Vienna City Hall , in the style of historicism 1856-1858 and executed by the master builder Karl Aichinger. The Lazarist Church consists of a simple brick building with a single nave and was badly damaged by bombs during World War II because of its proximity to Graz main train station . After the war, a true-to-original restoration of the exterior facade began, with figural decorations from the 19th century.
The entrance portal is adorned with sandstone reliefs of the Annunciation and Coronation of Mary. On the high altar are the figures of St. Vincent de Paul , John the Evangelist, Mary Magdalene and two angels. The statues of St. Joseph, the teaching Christ and Maria Immaculata on the pulpit roof were made by the artist Jakob Gschiel .
Further architectural monuments
The enclosure , the Lourdes grotto and a statue of a saint are also under monument protection .
