Otto Gereon Freiherr von Gutmann zu Sobernheim (* 1571/1572 in Koblenz ; † September 25, 1638 ) was auxiliary bishop in Cologne .

Life

Otto Gereon, who came from a family of ministers from the Electorate of Trier , inherited the title of baron from his mother and studied in Trier , Mainz and Cologne . From 1595 to 1599 as an alumne of the Collegium Germanicum in Rome, where he was also awarded a Dr. theol. doctorate , he became a canon in Münstermaifeld and Limburg. The young Gutmann zu Sobernheim entered the service of the Archbishop of Trier as a clergyman , but on May 11th, 1608 he transferred to the Archbishop of Cologne, who also appointed him to the Council of Churches and from December 30th, 1611 to October 9th 1616 employed as vicar general . Since January 29, 1611 Canon in Cologne, he was appointed coadjutor of the dean of St. Maria ad Gradus (Cologne) on July 20, 1619 and took over the deanery and the associated canonical at the church on March 10, 1622. To his Numerous benefices were added a canonical to St. Stephan in Mainz and the archdeaconates in Amöneburg, Utrecht and Hamm.

Gutmann did a great job as vicar general and member of the church council, even if he was unable to enforce his efforts to establish a seminary for the Archdiocese of Cologne.

The Archbishop of Cologne Ferdinand von Bayern appointed him auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Cologne, whereupon he was raised by the Pope on July 13, 1616 or on September 23, 1616 to titular bishop of Cyrenensis and auxiliary bishop in Cologne. The Cologne Nuncio Antonio Albergati then donated him the episcopal ordination on October 9, 1616 in Cologne Cathedral . The man who had been unable to work due to illness since 1635 and was also a member of the Third Order of St. Francis found his final resting place in the Carmelite Church in Cologne.
