Location of Hülsdonk in Viersen

Hülsdonk (actually: the Hülsdonk ) is a district of Viersen , district town of the district of the same name in the west of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia . Within the Viersen urban area, the district of Hülsdonk belongs to the district of Alt-Viersen and is located approx. 1.0–1.5 km east of the Altviersen city center. Within North Rhine-Westphalia, Hülsdonk also belongs to the Lower Rhine region and, as a district of Viersen, is part of the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region .

Earlier names for the area were, in outdated Dutch spelling, initially Hulsdunk , Hulßdunk , Hulßdunck or Hulsdonck , and later in outdated German spelling also Hülsdonc . As far as it is documented, the area of Hülsdonk was part of the Altviersener Honnschaft Rintgen since the Middle Ages , nothing is known of any local political independence.

etymology

When interpreting the place name Hülsdonk , both syllables are to be considered separately:
The first syllable " Hüls " is derived from the word " Huls ", which denotes the
holly in both Old High German and Middle Dutch . The second syllable " Donk " indicates a comparatively dry elevation in an otherwise damp or swampy environment. There are various explanatory models for the origin of the term Donk , which derive the word either from Old High German, Old Dutch or even further back from Celtic .

history

The original Hülsdonk was the former field between today's Zollweg and Krefelder Straße in the east of the former Altviersener Honnschaft Rintgen . In this area there has been a farm " up der Hulsdunk " (High German: on the Hülsdonk ) since at least around 1575 , in the vicinity of which the settlement of Hülsdonk gradually developed. As early as 1713, this initial Hülsdonk farm no longer existed, but several successor farms were grouped in the area that is about 1 to 2 meters higher than the rupture landscapes of Rahser Bruch and Rintger Bruch , which border on the north and east , which is why it was rightly called Donk .

During the French period , i.e. around 1800, a detailed map made at that time shows a development beyond the Krefelder Straße , which bounded the original Hülsdonk field to the north , to the area through which the street or alley called Hülsdonk runs today . By the 19th century incipient industrialization and the concomitant population explosion , the development of Hülsdonk compressed then essentially on their present size.

traffic

Road traffic

The area of Hülsdonk is crossed from west to east (or vice versa) by the North Rhine-Westphalian state road 29, this is the former federal road 7 , which is also called " Krefelder Straße " here . The L29 connects Hülsdonk to the west with the Alt-Viersen city center, to the east with the Willich district of Neersen , where there is also a connection to the A44 .

From the roundabout at Antwerpener Platz , the “ Canal Road ” branches off to the north , which connects Hülsdonk with Süchteln . This is an inner-city branch line, which is initially called “ Sittarder Straße ” in Rahser and then becomes “ Rheinstraße ” in Sittard . At the northern end of Sittard, this road finally joins the state road L475 (" Tönisvorster Straße ") at the beginning of Süchteln opposite the Holtzmühle .

Rail transport

passenger traffic

The railway lines from Mönchengladbach to Duisburg and from Mönchengladbach to Venlo run on a shared embankment on the southern edge of the neighboring new development area, Stadtpark Robend , approx. 500 m from the Hülsdonk. A newly built pedestrian tunnel leads from the north into Viersen station . There you can board a regional train and two regional express lines:RE 11, RE 13 or. RB 33.

Freight transport

There used to be a depot for the British Army on the Rhine on the site of the neighboring urban park Robend . This depot area had a freight rail connection to the German railway network . A rail line of the freight tracks roughly followed the course of today's Hageau-Promenade in the Robend city park and, near today's Antwerpener Platz , reached almost as far as the Hülsdonk area at least until the mid- 1970s .

Bus transport

As a district of Viersen, the Hülsdonk area is part of the tariff area of the Rhein-Ruhr transport association . The BVR bus Rheinland GmbH and the low Viersen serve the area with a total of five bus lines. As a result, Hülsdonk has direct connections with most of the Viersen districts. The two BVR lines also link the area with all four districts of the neighboring city of Willich as well as with the Düsseldorf suburbs of Meerbusch and Kaarst , where there is a connection to the light rail or S-Bahn network:

The general population growth in the 19th century and the associated abundance of children also required new schools, so in 1867 the Catholic elementary school Hülsdonk was founded, which had been at Krefelder Straße 123-125 since 1878. The building with the list number 460 has been a listed building since 2005.

The western part of the former school building (Krefelder Str. 123) is now called " Hubert Vootz House ". This is where the clubhouse of the Viersen local association of socialist youth in Germany (SJD - Die Falken) is located .
