The Hockey Club Milano Devils was a hockey club from Milan , Italy . It was founded in 1989 and played in Serie A , the highest league in Italian ice hockey.
history
The HC Devils Milano was founded in 1989 by the polisportiva Mediolanum Sport , which was financed by Silvio Berlusconi , and thus belonged to a number of different sports clubs under the umbrella of Mediolanum Sport . The club took over the Serie A license of HC Como , which had won the Serie B championship in 1989, and was thus able to enter Serie A directly.
Due to the ownership structure, the club quickly developed into a top club within the Italian league and was able to sign stars such as the Finnish striker Jari Kurri . Otherwise, the management (including Fabio Capello as general manager) relied on Canadian players with Italian roots and a passport.
Over the years the club played under different names, partly as Devils Mediolanum , partly as Lions Milano due to sponsorship by the Nestlé brand Lion . In the 1993/94 season, the team played under the name of AC Milan , which was also one of the clubs funded by Berlusconi.
The Devils were Italian champions three times in a row between 1992 and 1994 . In 1994 Berlusconi was elected Italian Prime Minister, and with that the financial commitment of his companies to the Devils ended. Associated with this was the sporting decline and missing the playoffs twice. In 1996 the team was sold and moved to Courmayeur in the Aosta Valley . There the team played in the 1996/97 season as Devils Courmaosta and was dissolved in 1999.
