Lists on the subject

The UMP ( U niversale M aschinen p istole ) is a submachine gun manufactured by the German weapons manufacturer Heckler & Koch . It is mainly used by the US Police Special Forces ( SWAT ).

history

After the MP 2000 as the successor to the MP5 with a bulk lock instead of a roller lock failed due to the popularity of the MP5 in the 1980s, Heckler & Koch developed the UMP in .45 ACP caliber for the US market in 1999 , as most shooters and police officers use this classic one Caliber will see a better effect in the target medium.

Due to the pronounced popularity of the MP5 due to the roller lock and as a status symbol as well as the greater distribution of the 9 × 19 mm cartridge , the UMP was unable to replace the MP5 as a standard weapon.

technology

The UMP is a shooting blowback loader with a ground lock . It can be set for left-handed and right-handed shooters and the military version has three fire modes: single shot , 2-shot burst and continuous fire .

Similar to that of the G36, the rifle's housing is made almost entirely of plastic, which saves weight and production costs - and thus also the price. The price savings, which are around 25 percent compared to the MP5, are also the main reason for the development of the UMP, as smaller police authorities in the important American market often did not have the means to purchase the more expensive MP5.

Model variants

The UMP is only available in one military version, but in three different calibers: The UMP in 9 × 19 mm, .40 S&W and .45 ACP. Externally, the variants are not easy to distinguish apart from the magazine shape (only .45-ACP variants use a straight magazine) and the labels.

USC

The USC (Universal Selfloading Carbine) is the civil version of the UMP. The caliber is .45 ACP.

Due to the modified design, UMP magazines cannot be used, as these can contain 25 rounds, but USC magazines only ten. A similar process was also used with the civilian version of the G36 , the SL8 sporting rifle , which cannot use the original 30 round magazines .

It only has a semi-automatic fire mode and, in contrast to the UMP, was made of light gray plastic outer parts to protect against so-called "apparent paragraphs" (UMP rather dark gray). Since the beginning of 2007, however, there are also all-black versions. In addition, the barrel is significantly longer and the shoulder rest cannot be folded in.

use

In addition to police units in the USA , the UMP is occasionally seen in the hands of special police units in Kosovo , the Middle East ( Jordan ) and the Far East ( South Korea ), but here mostly in caliber 9 × 19 mm and .40 S&W. In Europe, however, the UMP was unable to assert itself and is hardly to be found in the arsenals of the police. Since European police authorities continue to favor the 9 × 19 mm caliber, this will probably not change in the foreseeable future, as the financial outlay in terms of purchasing new weapons, spare parts and accessories as well as training costs would be higher than the savings compared to the existing ones MP5. For this reason, the MP5 was not replaced by the UMP - as originally planned - rather both weapon systems now exist in parallel.
