Johann Wilhelm Helmuth von Ziemietzky (born June 18, 1824 in Xanten , † June 8, 1899 in Nieder-Struse ) was a Prussian infantry general .

Life

Helmuth was the son of the Prussian Lieutenant Colonel Ludwig von Ziemietzky (1787-1836) and his wife Franziska, born von Clausnitz (1784-1829).

Military career

After his upbringing in his parents' house and visiting the cadet houses in Potsdam and Berlin , Ziemietzky joined the 16th Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army on August 9, 1842 as a second lieutenant . For further training he graduated from the General War School in October 1846 , but had to interrupt his studies there in 1848. He took part in the suppression of the barricade uprising in Berlin as well as in the battle near Missunde during the campaign against Denmark . After the suppression of the Elberfeld uprising , Ziemietzky became adjutant of the mobile 3rd division at the end of May 1849 . In this function he was used during the suppression of the Baden Revolution in the battles of Ubstadt , Durlach , Wald-Michelbach and Kuppenheim . In mid-October 1850, Ziemietzky was able to continue his training for a short time, but one month later he became adjutant of the mobile 27th division when mobilizing on the occasion of the autumn crisis . It was not until February 1851 that he continued his studies, which he completed in October 1851 with an excellent certificate and the recommendation for employment in the Great General Staff . Ziemietzky was then assigned to the topographic office and then to the General Staff. In 1855 he was promoted to prime lieutenant and with his promotion to captain he was appointed to the General Staff of the VI in July 1856 . Army corps transferred to Breslau . As a major , Ziemietzky was appointed commander of the 1st Battalion in the 2nd Upper Silesian Infantry Regiment No. 23 on January 9, 1864 . Promoted to lieutenant colonel in mid-June 1865, he was transferred to the general staff of the 9th Division in Glogau at the beginning of April 1866 . In this capacity, Ziemietzky took part in the battles near Nachod , Skalitz , Schweinschädel and Königgrätz in the same year during the war against Austria .

Awarded the Order of the Red Eagle III. After the peace treaty, he was appointed Chief of the General Staff of the General Government of Hanover, from which the X. Army Corps emerged shortly afterwards . Ziemietzky acted as the first chief of the general staff of this new corps and was promoted to colonel in April 1867 . Due to illness he had to take a long vacation and after his recovery he was appointed commander of the grenadier regiment "King Friedrich Wilhelm IV." (1st Pomeranian) No. 2 on April 11, 1868 . He led this association in 1870/71 during the war against France in the battles at Gravelotte and Villiers and at the sieges of Metz and Paris . Ziemietzky received both classes of the Iron Cross and after the Peace of Frankfurt was entrusted with the command of the 56th Infantry Brigade in Rastatt under position à la suite of his regiment on November 2nd, 1871 . At the beginning of January 1872 he was appointed commander of this brigade and shortly afterwards he was promoted to major general . Due to a recurring nervous ailment that he suffered from throughout his life, he had to take another longer vacation. From November 13, 1873, Ziemietzky was commander of the 42nd Infantry Brigade stationed in Frankfurt am Main until he was transferred to the army officers on September 25, 1877 and promoted to lieutenant general . On January 26, 1878, Kaiser Wilhelm I appointed him commander of the 31st division in Strasbourg . From May 14, 1881 to October 13, 1882 he was commander of the 3rd division in Stettin and then governor of Cologne . In this position, Ziemietzky received the Order of the Red Eagle First Class with oak leaves and swords on the ring on the occasion of the festival in January 1883. He was also awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Albrecht , the Order of Frederick and the Order of the Zähringer Lion . In approval of his resignation request, he was put up for disposition on October 17, 1883 with the character of General of the Infantry with a pension .

After his departure he took over the management of his Nieder-Struse estate in the Neumarkt district in Silesia . On the occasion of the 100th birthday of Kaiser Wilhelm I, Kaiser Wilhelm II paid tribute to him and placed Ziemietzky on March 22, 1897 à la suite of the grenadier regiment "King Friedrich Wilhelm IV." (1st Pomeranian) No. 2. He was Knight of Honor of the Order of St. John and died on his estate.

Ziemietzky had married Henriette von Lüttwitz (1826-1906) in Hartlieb on October 9, 1857 . She was a daughter of the manor owner Karl von Lüttwitz (* 1779) from his second marriage to Marianne, née Freiin von Schuckmann (1796-1857).
