history
The first mention of this area goes back to Carolingian times . A deed of donation to the Niederaltaich monastery in Bavaria mentions the "Bohbach" = today Buchbach and the apex of the Ahornic - Ahornberg = today Jauerling.
1193 the place Lo (h) is mentioned in the Vita Altmanni. A sick man from Lo makes a pilgrimage to the grave of St. Bishop Altmann in Göttweig and is healed of his ailments there.
Since a St. Mary's altar is mentioned in connection with a criminal act - the stolen Melker Cross is hidden behind the St. Mary's altar - Maria Laach is likely to have been a place of pilgrimage even then . It is quite possible that there is already an almost millennial pilgrimage tradition here.
