Fuschl Castle was built around 1461 for the Salzburg Prince Archbishop Sigmund Ⅰ. by Gleink-Volkerstorf (1452–1461) and Cardinal Burkhard von Weißpriach (1461–1466) and served as a hunting lodge. The exact construction period is not known, however. The first written mention of a prince-archbishop's hunt dates back to 1545. Under Archbishop Wolf Dietrich , the residence was extensively repaired in 1593 (construction of water pipes, dog stalls for hunting, sheepfold, cleaning). The bailiff of the Altentann office had to bring the bed linen for the announced archbishop. There are records of a great royal hunt under Paris Count von Lodron (1619–1653) from 1624. In 1669 the castle was judged to have been well preserved and preserved ; it was only inhabited by the archbishop and his court. In 1704 the mansion was adapted as an apartment for the hunter who had previously lived in the Herrenkuchl. In 1762 all windows were glazed.

In 1803 the dissolution of the ecclesiastical imperial principality of Salzburg resulted in the end of episcopal rule. After five changes of ownership, Salzburg finally came to the Austrian Empire in 1816 , and with it Fuschl Castle; it is administered by the Salinenamt Hallein. It fell into disrepair because it was used as a residence for foresters and was not maintained. In 1833 the castle was put up for auction, but it did not find a buyer. Therefore it had to be leased until 1851. In 1864 it was bought by the Linz shipmaster Michael Fink, who had already acquired holdings from Rif Castle . He was followed in 1873 by his daughter Amalie and her husband Michael Erl, royal Bavarian chief auditor (military prosecutor). He furnished Fuschl Castle with a number of paintings and furniture, some of which were valuable, but which have not been found since the end of the Second World War . In 1894 the property passed to Colonel Alfred von Erl, who lived here during the summer months. The couple Fritz and Babette Steinbacher from Munich followed in 1910; this was followed by the brothers Eduard and Martin Mayer, post office owners in Hof. They sold the property in 1929 to Gustav Edler von Remiz and his wife Hedwig (a granddaughter of the major German industrialist August Thyssen ).

In 1939 the castle was illegally leased to the Reich Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop via a detour ( Stiftung Haus Fuschl ) . When the rightful owner, Gustav Edler von Remiz, a friend of Ribbentrop's brother-in-law Stefan-Karl Henkell, protested against the expropriation, he was interned in the Dachau concentration camp (also because of his active membership in the " Fatherland Front ") , where he was interned on August 29th Died in 1939.

In 1945, an American soldiers' home was set up here.

The building is now a listed building . In the interior of the castle, little historical substance has been preserved from the time of the archbishop's hunting lodge. The basement still has the vaults from the 16th century. Individual wooden beam ceilings, door frames and stucco mirrors are still reminiscent of the earlier times. The current equipment with art inventory goes back to acquisitions from 1864.

In addition, modern bungalows ("Seehäusl") in wooden architecture based on the Salzkammergut boathouse style are available for guests.
