Huddinge is a commune ( municipality ) in the Swedish province of County of Stockholm and the historical province of Södermanland . The main town of the municipality is Huddinge .
More than 100,000 people live in the municipality, but more than half of the 131 km² area is covered with arable land, forests and lakes. The municipality consists of the residential areas ( Bostadsområden ) Flemingsberg, Segeltorp, Sjödalen-Fullersta, Skogås, Stuvsta-Snättringe, Trångsund and Vårby. A large part of the population lives in single-family houses, but there are centers with apartment buildings near railway stations. The Kungens kurva shopping center with Sweden’s largest IKEA store and the Heron City entertainment center is of economic importance , as has Sweden’s first Media Markt since 2006 .
history
The name Huddinge probably comes from the "Uddungar" ethnic group who lived here on a promontory of Lake Mälaren . These were often attacked by other ethnic groups from the lake. To warn their allies, the Uddungar lit campfires in high places. Today these fires are depicted in the municipal coat of arms. Some ruins of prehistoric protective castles and various rune stones can be visited in the community.
Before the railway line was built around 1860, Huddinge was dominated by agricultural farms. Some industrial companies also settled here with the train.
Culture and nature
Every year in May, the Huddinge Jazz Days take place, where mainly Swedish artists perform. There are seven nature reserves in the municipality , in which primeval forests and rare flowers are protected.
Town twinning
Huddinge's twin cities are Askim in Norway and Vantaa in Finland.
