The Interstate 66 (abbreviated I-66 ) is an interstate highway in the United States . It begins on Interstate 81 in Middletown , Virginia, and ends 123 kilometers in Washington, DC on US Highway 29 .

From Interstate 81, I-66 runs east. North of Front Royal , it meets US Highways 340 and 522 and crosses the Shenandoah River . Between Delaplane and Marshall , US Highway 17 uses the route of Interstate 66. West of Haymarket , the route is crossed by US Highway 15 and east of Gainesville by US Highway 29. It then passes the Manassas National Battlefield Park in the north and meets the US 29 again in Centerville. In the east of the city, Virginia State Route 7100 branches off as the Fairfax County Freeway . To the west of Fairfax, Interstate 66 crosses US Highway 50 and in Dunn Loring it meets Interstate 495 .

From the junction of State Route 267 as Hirst Brault Expressway , Interstate 66 bears the name Custis Memorial Parkway , named after the Custis family, from which Martha Washington comes from. In the west of Arlington it meets again US 29. The I-66 passes the center of Arlington in the south and runs on the west bank of the Potomac River parallel to the George Washington Memorial Parkway . Together with US Highway 50, the interstate crosses the river on the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge .

After crossing the river, it separates from US 50 and reaches the foothills of Constitution Gardens in the south . The interstate crosses the Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway north, passing the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts to the west and the Old Naval Observatory to the east . Then East Street branches off in an easterly direction. To the east of the Watergate building complex , the interstate passes under Virginia Avenue in a tunnel. Shortly afterwards it turns into the Whitehurst Freeway on US Highway 29 and ends after 123 kilometers.
