IC 309 is a lens-shaped galaxy of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Perseus in the northern sky . It is an estimated 194 million light years away from the Milky Way , about 50,000 light years in diameter, and is considered a member of the Perseus Cluster Abell 426 .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1250 , NGC 1259 , IC 308 , IC 310 .
The object was discovered by Lewis Swift on September 11, 1888 .
