IC 312 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E5 in the constellation Perseus in the northern sky . It is an estimated 227 million light years from the Milky Way , about 65,000 light years in diameter, and is a member of the Perseus Cluster Abell 426 .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1264 , NGC 1265 , NGC 1267 , NGC 1268 .
The object was discovered on November 3, 1888 by Edward D. Swift .
