In the aisles is a German feature film by Thomas Stuber from 2018 . The melodrama is based on a short story by Clemens Meyer and shows the world of a simple employee (portrayed by Franz Rogowski ) in the east German province.

The film premiered on February 23, 2018 as part of the 68th Berlinale and was released in German cinemas on May 24, 2018.

Christian

Somewhere in East Germany, in the present. Christian begins his probationary period in a remote wholesale market. The older Bruno from the drinks department, a former truck driver with a GDR biography, takes the silent young man under his wing. He teaches him all kinds of tricks and tips and becomes a fatherly friend. At work, Christian falls in love with the somewhat older Marion, who works in the confectionery department in the aisle next door. He finds a headband of hers that he takes home with him in a sparsely furnished prefabricated apartment in which he lives alone.

Marion

Marion begins to flirt with shy Christian at the coffee machine, calls him a "newbie" and admires his arm tattoos hidden under his work clothes. Meanwhile, Bruno introduces Christian to driving forklifts . He attends an extra- occupational course and finally, with the support of his colleagues, gets his forklift license . Christian's affection for Marion does not go unnoticed by Bruno. Christian surprises Marion with a Yes-Torty and candle for her birthday . But he learns from a colleague that Marion is married, even if allegedly not very happy. Due to the different shift work, Christian does not see Marion again until the company Christmas party. He tells her that he used to work in construction but was fired after an argument with his boss. Both exchange gentle caresses. In the following years Marion suddenly avoids Christian. One day when he speaks to her about it, she almost begins to cry and denies that he was the reason.

When Marion is suddenly on sick leave for a long time, Christian falls into a deep hole and gets drunk with former friends. He is late for work and receives a warning. Bruno tells Christian that Marion's husband is an "asshole" and that he shouldn't ask her if he likes her. Christian then wants to visit Marion with a bouquet of flowers. He finds the single-family house in a new housing estate seemingly abandoned and gains access through the ajar patio door. He secretly watches Marion taking a bath, but flees when she notices him. Later he gets drunk in a bar.

Bruno

One day, Bruno takes Christian home with him after work. He lives in a yard nearby, supposedly with his wife. Bruno confronts Christian with his suspicion that he was in prison. Christian affirms this and explains to him that as a teenager he committed break-ins with friends. Because he was still under juvenile criminal law at the time, the entry in the certificate of good conduct has meanwhile been deleted, which is why he was able to take up the position in the wholesale market at all. Bruno praises Christian as a “good man” and tells him that he missed his previous job as a truck driver - “the road” - very much.

When Marion comes back to work, she thanks Christian for the flowers accidentally left behind in the house. Both of them exchange tenderness again in the freezer after Christian tells her about the Eskimo greeting, which consists of noses touching when greeting.

When the workforce learns that Bruno, who actually lives alone, has committed suicide, Christian strolls through the now abandoned and rather neglected courtyard and the house. Later he and the other colleagues visit the urn burial .

Christian successfully completes the probationary period and takes Bruno's place in the drinks department. The director was Thomas Stuber , who also wrote the screenplay for the film together with Clemens Meyer . It is based on Meyer's short story of the same name, which he published in 2008 in his book of short stories, Die Nacht, die Lichter . The author himself had worked as a forklift driver in a wholesale store for three years. In 2015, Stuber and Meyer were awarded the German Screenplay Prize for the film script. After the short film Von Hunden und Pferde and the film drama Herbert , it is the third collaboration between Stuber and Meyer. The latter was awarded the German Silver Film Prize 2016 in the “Best Feature Film” category. Von Hunden und Pferde won the German Short Film Award in gold in 2011 and was awarded the student Oscar in silver in 2012.

The film received a production grant of 340,000 euros from the Medien- und Filmgesellschaft Baden-Württemberg , from the BKM in addition to a script grant of 30,000 euros, a production grant of 200,000 euros from the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg 100,000 euros and from the Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung in the amount of 450,000 euros and a grant of 378,206 euros from the German Film Fund.

The shooting took place in Leipzig , Wittenberg , Bitterfeld and Karlsruhe and began on February 28, 2017 near Leipzig. After further shooting in Wittenberg, where the scenes were shot in the confectionery department, photos were taken inside the Hamberger beverage wholesale market in Bitterfeld, where most of the film was shot. So far, Stubers directorial work has impressed 87 percent of all Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 7.6 out of a possible 10 points.
