Janowo ( German  Johannisberg ) is a village in the Polish Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship , which belongs to the urban and rural municipality Gołdap (Goldap) in the Gołdap district.

Geographical location

Janowo is located in the northeast of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship , four kilometers south of the district town of Gołdap (Goldap) and a few hundred meters east of a military training area ("Poligon Szkolny 15 Pułki").

history

Before 1945, the former Johannisberg consisted of several small farms and homesteads. In 1874, the place was incorporated into the newly established district Skötschen (Polish: Skocze), which - renamed "District Grönfleet" in 1939 - existed until 1945 and belonged to the Goldap district in the Gumbinnen district of the Prussian province of East Prussia .

The number of inhabitants of Johannisberg was 250 in 1910. It had decreased to 186 by 1933 and was still 168 in 1939.

As a result of the war, Johannisberg came to Poland with southern East Prussia in 1945 and was given the Polish name "Janowo". Today the village is a small town in the Gołdap urban and rural community in the Gołdapski powiat , until 1998 the Suwałki Voivodeship , and since then the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship .

Religions

Before 1945, Johannisberg had a predominantly Protestant population who was parish in the parish of the Goldaper New Church in the Goldap parish within the church province of East Prussia of the Church of the Old Prussian Union . For the Catholic church members, the parish church was also in Goldap.

The latter has been preserved to this day. The Evangelical Church in Gołdap is now a branch church of Suwałki in the Masurian Diocese of the Evangelical-Augsburg Church in Poland .
