Yevgeny Nikolajewitsch Gorstkow ( Russian Евгений Николаевич Горстков ; born May 26, 1950 in Orsk ; † September 12, 2020 ) was a Soviet boxer . He was European heavyweight champion in 1977 and 1979 .

Career

Yevgeny Gorstkow started as an adult for the sports organization Zenit Moscow . Otherwise, no information is available about his career as a teenager or junior. The first known result of him is a tournament victory in March 1972 in Moscow in the light heavyweight division . From 1973 he started in the heavyweight division and always weighed around 90 kg. So he was a relatively light heavyweight, but he was equipped with an impressive punch, which is proven by his many early victories. After 1990 Yevgeny Gorstkov became a busy referee in Russian professional boxing.

In 1973 he first won the Soviet heavyweight championship with a techn. KO victory in the 2nd round over Pyotr Sajew . In the following years he won this title in 1974 with a points victory in the final over Gennadi Kokurin, in 1975 with a point victory over Pyotr Sajew, 1977 with a second round victory over Pyotr Sajew and 1978 with a point victory in the final over Mikhail Subbotin . In addition, in 1974, 1976 and 1977 he also won the title of so-called "absolute master", in which the best boxers in the three heaviest weight classes were allowed to compete. 1974 with a techn. KO victory in the third round over Igor Vysotsky , 1976 with a point victory in the final over Viktor Tereschtschenko and 1977 with a point victory in the final over Pyotr Sajew. With a total of eight titles he was by far the most successful Soviet boxer of those years with which he left his fiercest competitors Pyotr Sajew, Viktor Petrovich Ulyanich and Igor Vysotsky far behind. Yevgeny Gorstkov had no luck at the Russian championships in 1976 and 1980, of all things. In both 1976 and 1980 he lost in the semifinals against Pyotr Sajew on points and got no chance to participate in the Olympic Games of those years.

He contested the first international championship in 1974 when he was nominated for the world championship in Havana . He lost there but surprisingly against Rajko Miljić from Yugoslavia in the second round by techn. KO in the 2nd round, with which he was eliminated and only finished 9th. He was much more successful at the next two international championships he contested. First he became European heavyweight champion in 1977 in Halle (Saale) with a knockout win in the 2nd round over Antoni Kuskowski, Poland, a point win over Mircea Simon , Romania and another knockout win in the 2nd round over Jürgen Fang Hänel , GDR. Then he became European heavyweight champion in Cologne in 1979 . At this championship two heavyweight champions were determined for the first time. A weight class with a weight limit of up to 91 kg body weight was introduced and this weight class was designated as heavyweight. What was new was the so-called super heavyweight, which started at 91 kg body weight. Evgeni Gorstkow beat Georgi Stoimenow , Bulgaria by knockout in the 1st round and then defeated Grzegorz Skrzecz , Poland, Ion Cernat, Romania and Werner Kohnert , GDR, on points.

He did not contest any other international championships. Noteworthy in the career of Yevgeny Gorstkow are several victories over US boxers in the annual international fights between the USSR and the USA . In these international battles he defeated u. a. the Americans John Tate , Greg Page and Jimmy Clark , who later became very successful as professional boxers , while he suffered a point defeat against Tony Tubbs .
