John Pierce (singer)
John Charles Pierce (born January 11, 1959 in Woodstock , Illinois , USA ) is an American opera singer ( tenor ) and vocal teacher .
Life
John Pierce was born to C. David Pierce and Sally Marie Emrich Pierce. The father was a trombonist and conductor , the mother played the baritone horn and both parents worked as music teachers .
Pierce studied with William Warfield , Grace Wilson and John Wustman at the University of Illinois until 1982 and graduated with a Bachelor and Master of Music . He then began a doctorate at Indiana University , which he dropped out in 1987.
During his studies he performed in various large baritone roles. So he sang a small role at the festival in Santa Fe and jumped for a large role. After an apprenticeship in Santa Fe, Pierce moved to North Carolina , raised a family, and began a career as a singing teacher. From 1988 he taught music at the University of North Carolina and switched from baritone to hero tenor. He later taught at the North Carolina School of the Arts, the University of Michigan, and the University of Minnesota Duluth . In 1990 he won the Wagner Prize at the Liederkranz Competition in New York City and also successfully took part in other national and international competitions.
In 1992 he moved with his family to Germany and accepted an engagement at the Cottbus State Theater . In 2002 Pierce ended his engagement in Cottbus and has since worked internationally as a freelance artist. He has performed in Belgrade , Dresden , Frankfurt am Main , Hanover , Karlsruhe , Manaus , Mexico City , Moscow , Ōtsu , Rio de Janeiro , Sofia , Stuttgart , Tokyo , Vienna and Zagreb and has worked with renowned orchestras and under well-known conductors . In 2004 he made a guest appearance as Pied Piper in the opera of the same name by Friedrich Cerha at the Wiener Festwochen , made headlines as Tannhäuser in the small city theater in Minden in October 2005 and was on stage at the Richard Wagner Festival Wels in 2010 .
In addition to his work as an opera singer, Pierce is also a sought-after concert soloist and has appeared in oratorios by Handel , Gounod and Dvořák . He sings in Requien by Verdi and Mozart and the 9th Symphony by Beethoven and has recitals all over Europe.
John Pierce is married to the soprano Alice Pierce . The daughter Melissa is a violinist , the son Nathaniel is a cellist .
